Michael Martinez: There are hundreds of search resources across the Web that may drive traffic to your sites. Those search resources usually fit into one of these categories: 1. Algorithmic search engines using their own software 2. Algorithmic search engines using someone else's software 3. Meta search engines 4. Web directoriesAsk, Google, Live, and Yahoo! are the major algorithmic search engines using their own software.Yahoo! operates some search engines under old brands it acquired (the most notable being Altavista) but there are a fair number of ISP Web sites (like Comcast and Verizon) that use major search engines' resources. Also, some search resources like AOL use other search engines' resources. The best known meta search engines are probably Mamma, Dogpile, and Webcrawler.Web directories may number in the thousands but most of them are specialty or niche directories. Of course, everyone knows about DMOZ, JoeAnt, and a few others like them.

7 Vote(s)

Its no secrete that the reputation of the SEO industry isn't as many of us wish it to be. The term "snake-oil salesman" has been used few times to describe our industry, unfortunately. It might be therefore we see some responsible SEO companies found themselves in a position where posting a declaration of a "SEO Code of Ethics" on their sites has been a necessity rather than a luxury. The more the clients and employers (in case In-House SEOes) become SEO-educated the more they would demand of the SEOes to declare, follow and be responsible of a set of "SEO Code of Ethics" which insures the quality, and safety (not to be penalized by search engines) of the SEO works conducted on their sites.Unfortunately, I have noticed that there is no consensus yet within the industry upon what such "SEO Code of Ethics" to cover and contains. However, there has been few SEO companies which have created their own "SEO Code of Ethics". For example:http://www.bruceclay.com/web_ethics.htmhttp://www.searchandsocial.com/seo-ethics.htmlI guess several SEO companies would be pleased to declare and post a "SEO Code of Ethics" once there is a standard version on which the majority of the SEO industry has already agreed upon. There is no need at present to mandate or police such "SEO Code of Ethics", IMO. What we need is to agree upon and create such "SEO Code of Ethics" and leave it up to each SEO company to decide for itself whether to declare and post such "SEO Code of Ethics".

38 Vote(s)

Though I don't always agree with what GrayWolf writes, I find Michael very entertaining most of the time. Therefor this Sphinn :-)"To those organizers I challenge them to look in the mirror and realize that you've now become the same evil and sexist pigs you started out with the goal of overcoming. So whats my gripe, that Blogher limits their conference speakers to only women. Don't believe me go to any of the past speaker lists (link, link, link, link) and try to find a speaker who is a man, do an on page search for "his", "him", or " he", now try searching for "her" her's" or "she", and you'll see what I mean. It's not that I don't think that women aren't qualified to speak, nothing could be farther from the truth, but I do ask the following question, if you want to provide the best conference are only women qualified to speak. Now Blogher doesn't completely discourage against men attending, here's a flickr set of the BlogHer men attendees, including people like Robert Scoble. However if you are a man and you want to attend BlogHer, you're treated like second class citizen, only to be seen and not heard."

36 Vote(s)

"Sometimes people think that the Google Toolbar led to Google indexing a page. Here's a recent such story, for example, which speculates how urls with the substring "mms2legacy" got indexed. Here's where I started to disagree:-------------------------------------------------The reason for this [supposedly unlisted urls getting crawled --Matt], explained Ken Simpson, CEO of anti-spam company MailChannels, is that one's Google Toolbar may be configured to pass URLs that one visits to Google for indexing. "If you run Google Toolbar, it knows pages you visit," he said. -------------------------------------------------Sorry, but if Ken Simpson is implying that the Google Toolbar led to these urls being crawled, then he's mistaken."

7 Vote(s)

"A couple of weeks ago, Adobe announced that it was working with Google and Yahoo! on making Flash content easier to index in search engines. Google said it was using the search-engine specific Flash player that Adobe had made available (Yahoo!'s integration is still in the works). While I think it's great and absolutely vital that search engines continue to evolve beyond strictly text (to ensure they are providing the best possible experience for their users), I don't think this announcement means that all the Flash content on the web will now suddenly start ranking in search results and I don't think that Flash developers can stop thinking about search engine optimization."

48 Vote(s)

Matt posted today on his blog the following question:"What are the metrics that argue for having someone engage with a community, listen to feedback, and push for changes? Any smart person intuitively knows that good community relations are a solid idea, but how do you prove that? In a company of size X, how many people should pay attention to or be dedicated to community relations? I'd be interested if other people have thought about the business case for goodwill, or know of resources that discuss this."I allowed myself to translate "company of size X" to Google ;)

10 Vote(s)

Recently you might have noticed what could be considered a shift in the right direction in Google attitude towards SEOs ;-)Webmaster Trends Analysts (John, Jonathan, Susan) wrote on 30th June 2008 on Google Webmaster Central blog:"You may have noticed that we recently rewrote our article on What is an SEO? Does Google recommend them? Previously, the article had focused on warning people about common SEO scams to look out for, but didn't mention many of the valuable services that a helpful SEO can provide. The article now notes some of the benefits of search engine optimization, and provides some guidance to site owners who are considering hiring an SEO."Within the article in question, Google listed few points to be considered before clients hire a SEO: If you're thinking about hiring an SEO, the earlier the better. A great time to hire is when you're considering a site redesign, or planning to launch a new site. That way, you and your SEO can ensure that your site is designed to be search engine-friendly from the bottom up. However, a good SEO can also help improve an existing site. Some useful questions to ask an SEO include: * Can you show me examples of your previous work and share some success stories? * Do you follow the Google Webmaster Guidelines? * Do you offer any online marketing services to complement your organic search business? * What kind of results do you expect to see, and in what timeframe? * What's your experience in my industry? * How long have you been in business? While SEOs can provide clients with valuable services, some unethical SEOs have given the industry a black eye through their overly aggressive marketing efforts and their attempts to manipulate search engine results in unfair ways. Practices that violate our guidelines may result in your site being removed from the Google index.

5 Vote(s)

Matt Cutts has illustrated in his latest post "Review: Kitt-In Box" (http://www.mattcutts.com/blog/review-kitt-in-box/), what he meant by "links that will stand the test of time". And he mentioned in a comment on the same post (http://www.mattcutts.com/blog/review-kitt-in-box/#comment-129224):" I only review stuff that I genuinely want to, and accept no payment. Just to be clear."Matt mentioned the term "links that will stand the test of time"" in a latest interview with Eric Enge (http://www.stonetemple.com/articles/interview-matt-cutts-061608.shtml). Matt defined the said links as:"Those links are typically given voluntarily. It is an editorial link bysomeone, and it's someone that's informed. They are not misinformed, they are not tricked; there is no bait and switch involved. It'sbecause somebody thinks that something is so cool, so useful, or sohelpful that they want to make little sign posts so that other peopleon the web can find that out."That means, when Matt gave a backlink to the vendor of Kitt-In Box (http://www.therefinedfeline.com/kitinbox-cat-perch.htm), he did that:- Voluntarily.- Matt was Informed (not misinformed. not tricked).- There was no bait and switch involved.- Matt see the Kitt-In Box so cool, so useful, or sohelpful. - Matt wanted to make little sign posts so that other peopleon the web can find that out.And now we know "What are the links that will stand the test of time?".Thanks, Matt.

11 Vote(s)
