Greetings, Sphinners,I have watched, with interest, the use of the down vote on Sphinn comments on submissions like this:http://sphinn.com/story/11830In the above, user, Corey, says his comment was downvoted so much it disappeared. This means no one who came after the downvoters got to see this member's comment. What if if might have proved of interest to them, if not to you, the downvoter? I don't know what Corey said, so there's no way to know why his comment was found unacceptable. The down vote is striking me as:A) Uncivilized. It feels like flipping someone the bird.B) Cowardly. A little like throwing pebbles at someone while hiding behind a wall.C) Not Constructive. A down vote lacks clarity of meaning because it is wordless. Why not take the time to explain why you disagree with the comment in question in order to open a meaningful debate or discussion? If you feel strongly enough to hit that button, but don't feel strongly enough to say what you didn't like about the comment, what does voting things down get you? Why is it worth it?If you use the Vote Down feature, does your motive fit any of the following descriptions? I'd like to know if:1) You are simply too busy going from one SM site to the next (or, possibly, working on something else) to take the time to comment on a remark you don't like or disagree with?2) You don't like the person who wrote the offending comment for personal reasons and this is your way of giving them a little dig?3) You feel it a privilege of Social Media to show others the error of their ways and the vote down puts the power in your hands?4) You feel Sphinn should be censored by its members so that unpopular ideas have no place here?5) None of the above?I don't have a personal stake in this beyond being fascinated by the evolution of SM and what it teaches us about user behavior, and, potentially, human behavior in general. I'd like your feedback on this issue.

5 Vote(s)

Greetings Sphinners,I registered with Sphinn when it launched, and excitement in the forums I belong to led to myself and the folks I know in these forums stalking and befriending one another here at Sphinn. In the beginning, I 'knew' all of my friends. After we'd all befriended one another, I sort of forgot about the stalking feature.I took a look at my stalkers today, after a number of weeks of oblivion, and I am a little bit puzzled about the stalking/befriending feature now. I found 10 people stalking me. It was nice to see, but when I cross-checked this to see if any of these folks had ever sphunn any of my submissions, none of them had. Are we supposed to be using the stalking feature to let someone know we'd like to be added as their friend? Does it have a use apart from this that I'm not getting? And, if you want someone to add you as a friend, shouldn't you have sphunn at least one of their articles, as a sort of sign of your approval of their content? It seems kind of weird to me that someone would want to be your friend if they don't really like your writing. Does this make sense to you?Sphinn is the first SM site I've ever really invested time in. I have been turned off by the hostile and juvenile atmosphere of Digg and its ilk. I really like Sphinn, and I've tried to submit things I thought might be of interest to the community here, and have stalked people whose writing I love. My own success has been...well, lame. So far, the most Sphinns I've gotten on anything I've submitted has been 7. I say that without any bitterness, because for the most part, I write for small business owners, not really search marketers. Likely, my content isn't ideal for the advanced skills of most Sphinners. But, it is a little confusing. The last post I submitted was cited on both Kim Krause Berg's blog and Jennifer' Laycock's. Here, it received a rather sad 4 Sphinns. And yet, there are all of these folks stalking me. So, my question is...what does it mean to *you* when you stalk someone? Are you just watching them to see if they one day attain greatness? Does it mean you want to be their friend? That you like their submissions? In the absence of corresponding sphinns from the stalker, it is a bit of a puzzle to me, and I feel I'm not understanding the feature.I'd appreciate your input! Thank you!Miriam

9 Vote(s)

Greetings Sphinners,When making a recent comment on a Sphinn post, I was thrilled to realize that the spellcheck wasn't trying to correct my use of 'website'. This is the first time I've seen a spellchecker accept the compound form of this that most people in the web industries use. Users may write 'web site', but our familiarity with the word has turned it into a compound for most of us, from what I've noticed. However, I would love to see Sphinn's spellcheck customized to accept the following common terms:sphinn bloggooglediggreddit These are just 5. I bet sphinners can suggest many more. It would really improve the usability of this site's spellcheck if you didn't have to keep hitting ignore for these words all of us write every day. Is it possible to do this? Would you like to see this happen? What words do you commonly write that spellcheck doesn't recognize?Miriam

2 Vote(s)
