The community of North Oaks, Minnesota, has requested that all street-level images of their community be removed from Google Maps. North Oaks has 100% privately-held roads and land, and uninvited users of the roads are considered trespassers. Because Google gets street-level images using a car with a dashboard camera, the collection of street-level images of the community was accomplished via trespass. While this is a somewhat unique case, as even many gated communities have public roads, this is an interesting moment for Google Maps as it highlights how more people are concerned about how images of streets and homes may violate privacy.

7 Vote(s)

Less than a week after Minnesota's bridge diaster -- and less than 24 hours after several exits on I35W and I94 were re-opened for traffic -- Google Maps has updated so that searchers will not receive directions via the now defunct bridge. This demonstrates both that Google learned from some past Google Maps/Google Earth controversies post-Katrina, and that creating logic jumps for mapping directions may not be especially difficult for Google and others.

2 Vote(s)
