New Research Paper from Stanford Info Lab.From the abstract:Yahoo! Answers represents a new type of community portal that allows users to post questions and/or answer questions asked by other members of the community, already featuring a very large number of questions and several million users. Other recently launched services, like Microsoft's Live QnA and Amazon's Askville, follow the same basic interaction model. The popularity and the particular characteristics of this model call for a closer study that can help a deeper understanding of the entities involved, their interactions, and the implications of the model. Such understanding is a crucial step in social and algorithmic research that could yield improvements to various components of the service, for instance, personalizing the interaction with the system based on user interest. In this paper, we perform an analysis of 10 months worth of Yahoo! Answers data that provides insights into user behavior and impact as well as into various aspects of the service and its possible evolution.

3 Vote(s)

That's what Yahoo Europe vice president of connected life Geraldine Wilson predicted last week.We agree. Why?Well many reasons but if we can name only one, it has the POTENTIAL to save people time and effort (just like a good info pro) and provide info where and when needed. Of course, potential and reality might not equal each other.Don't forget that mobile can also mean audio and video. For example, phonecasting (either streaming or dial-up) vs. podcasting.

5 Vote(s)

In a few words...It's all about trusting the organisation asking for and holding the info. This is even true for those who once showed caution providing personal info. From the introduction:"With public concern over online fraud, new research, funded by the Economic and Social Research Council, has revealed that internet users will reveal more personal information online if they believe they can trust the organisation that requests the information. 'Even people who have previously demonstrated a high level of caution regarding online privacy will accept losses to their privacy if they trust the recipient of their personal information' says Dr Adam Joinson, who led the study."Findings"56 percent of internet users stated that they have concerns about privacy when they are online. The central issue was whether websites were seen as particularly trustworthy - or untrustworthy - causing users to alter their behaviour. When a website is designed to look trustworthy, people are willing to accept privacy violations. But, the same actions by an untrustworthy site leads to people behaving in a much more guarded manner."

8 Vote(s)
