<description><![CDATA[While developing a mini-site for Lucifer Was, a Norwegian prog rock band, we found it sensible to link to various online stores that have the bands albums for sale.Apple's iTunes is one of them. iTunes is, as most Sphinners will know, a piece of software, not a web site, and should as such lay outside the realm of SEO.However, you can link to songs and artist found on the store (right click on any link inside the store to find the URL). The URLs lead to a generic web page containing javascripts code that (1) checks out whether the &quot;clicker&quot; has iTunes installed. If the answer is yes, the script will open iTunes and the relevant page within iTunes. (2) If not the script will display the regular HTML found in the page. This text promotes iTunes and iPods and encourages you to download the program.Given that more and more online bands and artist link to iTunes pages, Apple will get an increasing amount of targeted link love, with anchor text proudly displaying band and album names. And it is all waisted on a generic redirect page.To me this is just another example of companies not combining search engine marketing competences, general marketing and ICT development.Apple could  -- without spamming the search engines -- use content from the iTunes band and album presentations to generate open web pages, and lead these links to those pages. Hence our links to iTunes presentation of Lucifer Was should go to an open iTunes page presenting the band. They could then add download buttons to that page.Think about it: Thousands and thousands of pages with relevant, original,content, just waiting to be spidered.Ah, well. (And for those who wonder if Lucifer Was is yet another Norwegian suicidal satanist black metal band: It is not. The band leader , Thore Engen, is actually a Christian. The name of the band refers to the Lucifer myth, a major theme in his lyrics. Is there a business model there?Britannica have more than 120,000 articles, all of it high quality linkable, lovable content - a search engine marketer's wet dream.Britannica actually did open up its full text to free on-line searching, between 1999 and 2001. It then then closed it again, probably because of falling sales of CD-ROMs and printed volumes. But that was before the success of Google AdWords. At the moment of posting the link to the article is dead, but it shows up in the site's web feed.&quot;Are we self-referentially Diggifying ourselves into a huge hole of sophomoric irrelevance?&quot; he asks.His argument is that Sphinning stories is similar to lurking. It's passive - not constructive. He points to Rae Hoffman's comment about Sphinn being a popularity contest. Andrew says:&quot;...of course Sphinn is a popularity contest! But unlike Rae, I don't seem to think it's &quot;whining&quot; to point out that it's not the kind of popularity contest that results in a useful experience for any reader outside of the self-reinforcing circle.
