He also discusses banner ethics:"Most of our eyetracking findings on Web advertising present no ethical dilemmas.
While developing a mini-site for Lucifer Was, a Norwegian prog rock band, we found it sensible to link to various online stores that have the bands albums for sale.Apple's iTunes is one of them. iTunes is, as most Sphinners will know, a piece of software, not a web site, and should as such lay outside the realm of SEO.However, you can link to songs and artist found on the store (right click on any link inside the store to find the URL). The URLs lead to a generic web page containing javascripts code that (1) checks out whether the "clicker" has iTunes installed. If the answer is yes, the script will open iTunes and the relevant page within iTunes. (2) If not the script will display the regular HTML found in the page. This text promotes iTunes and iPods and encourages you to download the program.Given that more and more online bands and artist link to iTunes pages, Apple will get an increasing amount of targeted link love, with anchor text proudly displaying band and album names. And it is all waisted on a generic redirect page.To me this is just another example of companies not combining search engine marketing competences, general marketing and ICT development.Apple could -- without spamming the search engines -- use content from the iTunes band and album presentations to generate open web pages, and lead these links to those pages. Hence our links to iTunes presentation of Lucifer Was should go to an open iTunes page presenting the band. They could then add download buttons to that page.Think about it: Thousands and thousands of pages with relevant, original, content, just waiting to be spidered.Ah, well. (And for those who wonder if Lucifer Was is yet another Norwegian suicidal satanist black metal band: It is not. The band leader , Thore Engen, is actually a Christian. The name of the band refers to the Lucifer myth, a major theme in his lyrics. The name has lead to some controversy, though, which proves the argument that you can never be too careful when selecting a brand or band name.)

2 Vote(s)

Is there a business model there?Britannica have more than 120,000 articles, all of it high quality linkable, lovable content - a search engine marketer's wet dream.Britannica actually did open up its full text to free on-line searching, between 1999 and 2001. It then then closed it again, probably because of falling sales of CD-ROMs and printed volumes. But that was before the success of Google AdWords.
I believe Danny argued that the name Sphinn is a variant of Spin, the spin.com domain being taken. This can obviously not be the truth, and is just another example of how people in high positions try to fool those less fortunate in life. There must be a hidden and more sinister reason for choosing this name, and this post will reveal it all.Danny argues that Sphinn is to be pronounced /spin/ like in English "spin". But if that was the case, why did he choose to replace P with Ph?Ph is not a representation for F. It clearly represents the Greek letter PHI (), a labio-labial or bilabial fricative found in ancient Greek, which in modern Greek and English is pronounced as F. Hence the proper pronunciation of Sphinn would be /sfin/ (cp. Phillips). The great social anthropologist and historian Dame Francis Yates have argued that Sullivan has chosen this spelling because of its connotations with the Norse word "finn", which means "find" in English. Hence it is interpreted to be a reference to search as in search engine. This is a clever ruse to throw the ignorant off the track, and proves that Yates is part of a greater conspiracy. Her studies in renaissance occult Hermetism should give the reader an indication of where we are heading./sfin/ clearly does not mean anything in English, which proves that the PH is really a secret code meant for a secret society. PHI is a symbol for the golden ratio 1.618... in mathematics, art, architecture and is given profound weight in occult societies. The golden ratio is, for instance, found in the pentagram, which is found in both the American, Soviet and Chinese flags. The Freemasons uses the pentagram, which proves that we are talking about a global conspiracy here. As to the meaning of the word "Sphinn" it may be interpreted to be a variant of the word "sphinx". According to the Wikipedia there was a single Sphinx in Greek mythology, a unique demon of destruction and bad luck, which most likely indicates that the word serves as a reminder of future events to the initiated. The word "sphinx" comes from the Greek - Sphigx, apparently from the verb - sphiggo, meaning "to strangle". This conspiracy is out to strangle the freedom of the world and Danny Sullivan is part of it!Sphinxes normally tell riddles, and the name of this site clearly represents such a riddle, meaning that it points beyond the immediate announcement of death and catastrophe. The numerological value of SPHINX is 90, S19P16H8I9N14X2490 is a sacred number found among the descendants of Jesus (the Merovingans and the secret society of Prieure de Sion) and points to the 90 aeons of time of which our time is the final. Divided by ten you get the sacred number nine, which has profound importance among the Illuminati. It cannot be a coincidence that the numerical value of the name DANNY is 57D4A1N14N14Y24In 1957 the United States Federal Bureau of Investigation arrested Jimmy Hoffa and charged him with bribery. Hoffa was a leader of the Communist-Capitalist Wall Street led conspiracy, and this was considered a huge setback which they have sworn to revenge. Moreover, 5+7 is 12. 12 in this context points to the heathen Zodiac and the 12 daemons that rule this world. To further proves this point PHI is also part of the the name of PHI DELTA KAPPA, one of the fraternities depicted in the 1978 movie Animal House, which starred John Belushi, a secret member of the Freemasons. It should also be noted that SFIN is the acronym UK Parliament Subcommittee on Agenda and Procedure. Danny now lives in the UK, which is clearly part of a greater plan to undermine British democracy. All this should serve as a wake up call for all concerned citizens. And there is unfortunately more to come. Another of the sites devoted to search and search engine marketing is called Pandia, a reference to the Greek goddess of light and enlightenment. This is clearly a thinly veiled reference to Lucifer, the fallen angel of light. Say no more!

23 Vote(s)

Andrew Goodman has an well written rant on Sphinn and other social media over at Traffick. At the moment of posting the link to the article is dead, but it shows up in the site's web feed."Are we self-referentially Diggifying ourselves into a huge hole of sophomoric irrelevance?" he asks. His argument is that Sphinning stories is similar to lurking. It's passive - not constructive. He points to Rae Hoffman's comment about Sphinn being a popularity contest. Andrew says:"...of course Sphinn is a popularity contest! But unlike Rae, I don't seem to think it's "whining" to point out that it's not the kind of popularity contest that results in a useful experience for any reader outside of the self-reinforcing circle. I never cared who Dugg what article to the top, and how it was done, either. I didn't know anyone with a full-time job who really partook of the exercise."Andrew is clearly worried about Sphinn becoming just another source of link bait, with insiders soliciting friends for votes (giving Jill W. as an example!):"But the increasing and well-placed focus on the community and the wisdom (or at least comprehensiveness) of crowds means potentially one major loss: an abdication of editorial voice."Maybe we can never return to an era of just a few authoritative voices in any industry, Andrew concludes: "But isn't it just a little bit troubling that the A-Listers of today are so often devoid of substantive editorial authority beyond merely being passionate champions of the echo chamber itself?"Andrew definitely has a point, and much that is written in SEM blogs must be considered repetitive link bait. Still, the fact that a sites like Sphinn and Digg represent popularity contest mash-ups do not necessarily mean that the blogs that deliver content to these sites lack an editorial voice. Sphinn's siter site Search Engine Land certainly does not, and if Jill is guilty of exploiting the potential of Sphinn listings, the articles she links to contain both analysis and original opinion. My problem is a related one, though: The Diggs, Sphinns, Wikios and Techmemes of the world is leading to a serious information overload. In spite of their objectives, they are not able to sort out the best analysis of what's going on in the world of search engines.

3 Vote(s)
