A Firefox extension that integrates with Google results page. Click a button under the results, and a text summary of the results is generated. The idea is to save users time from drilling into each result individually, and give an overview on the topic of the query.

3 Vote(s)

ReadWriteWeb has a very detailed analysis of what it really takes for a newcomer search engine to compete with Google:http://www.readwriteweb.com/archives/competing_with_google_search.phpThe obstacles to compete certainly go way beyond the search algorithm. This raises interesting strategy questions for many search startups (mine as well). It is hard to imagine a brand-new search engine built from the ground up taking the lion's share of the market. But I think there will always be niches to get in and make a difference - and win the users.

3 Vote(s)

I'd like to share with fellow Sphinners a very non-traditional concept of Web search results that we have at SenseBot. We think that by shifting the paradigm of what search results are, user satisfaction with search can increase dramatically. CURRENT MODEL:Traditionally, search results consist of individual Web pages. Even with the latest advances in extracting meaning from the pages, or clustering results, or creating media-rich expressions of the results, the model remains fundamentally the same. The problem with it is that you have to drill down into individual Web pages, not necessarily relevant to your search. SENSEBOT'S APPROACH:SenseBot introduces a new type of search result - an overall summary on the topic of your search query instead of a collection of links to Web pages. SenseBot takes results returned by Google or Yahoo (Microsoft Live coming soon) and summarizes them, preparing a concise digest on the topic of your query. The top relevant pages are summarized as a whole rather than each one separately. This approach is unique to SenseBot and is our intellectual property. WHY?The idea is to give the user a quick grasp of the topic he is querying on instead of making him go through individual pages. Any type of search where the user is trying to understand a concept; or get a digest on a person or event or activity; or quickly identify the best source of information on the topic, should benefit greatly from SenseBot. In short, we want to enable the users to grasp 80% of the answer in just a few seconds rather than spending a long time sifting through often irrelevant pages. You can try our Beta version and browse sample summaries at www.sensebot.net. Looking forward to your thoughts and comments.

4 Vote(s)
