If you can manage to think one step ahead, you'll manage to stay ahead of your competition as well. And sure, you might have success with something that you made in just five minutes, or with something that accidentally came across your path, but you'll only reach maximum effect if you're dedicated enough to walk through all steps.

40 Vote(s)

A great rant from Li towards the social media spammers... Does SMM = Social Spamming? Or is it about building relationships? Search Marketing Gurus - Along with that, I was just flabbergasted at a submission on Sphinn about gaming Twitter for "do follow" links. It wasn't so much the fact that someone wrote this post. Nickycakes is a great programmer and does come up with some time saving ideas, so naturally if he sees opportunities from his frame of mind (being a reformed black hat and all) he's going to write about it. However, what really made my jaw drop was who all Sphunn this article to put it to the front page. People who I have greatly respected and thought they were pretty honest when it came to doing things in social media. But here they were promoting something that pretty clearly is something that would "spam" a social media channel.

45 Vote(s)

But after using the site and comprehensively going over the feature set and its implementation I am thoroughly impressed. Ultimately, I think Plurk is an amazing evolution over the previous generation of lifestreaming services that does almost everything you'd expect to find and does it better, while adding unique and interesting features of its own. Perhaps the only quibble I have with the service right now is that when I reply to someone else's Plurk that reply is restricted to that person's Plurk and doesn't show up in my lifestream otherwise.

60 Vote(s)

I think Jill's comment about Matt's take sums it up best;"Quite the leap some people are making in taking what Matt said at Sphinn about one specific link baiting incident, and trying to apply it to every article that ever gets published. From what I read, Matt was simply providing his (and presumably) Google's stance on Lyndon's link bait that was posted on money.co.uk.Sure, if someone else does something similar and it is obvious or promoted as such, then Google would take the same stance. But I didn't see Matt say anywhere that they were going to build some sort of moral compass into their algorithm. I find these discussions that suggest as much to be taking away from the real issue at hand, which has nothing to do with Google."I for one am becomming frustrated with how we tend to really over-do things sometimes...Just my 2c...

13 Vote(s)

Patrick has a shout out for ideas on a kick-ass SEO tool. Let your opinions be known (shouldn' be hard around here oui?). Some starters are; * Ability to analyse up to 20 domains at once * Tool can analyse 20 domains and find their most common link sources * The tool should run in the background either via the web or a browser * Show PR and link data for any page on a site * Show PR and link data for any page that links to you * Show anchor text and title tags for these pages * Option to exclude nofollow links * Graphs of how all link data changes over time * Ability to filter links by domain extension * Ability to filter links by hosting location * Easy link to whois data for every domain * Calculation of deep link percentage * Use of colours to represent one way or reciprocal links * Ability to exclude certain domains from the reports * Ability to exclude sitewide links

39 Vote(s)

Search Engine Land - When I am asked if I have a link building guide or manual which summarizes my own personal best practices, I explain that every single site must have its own individual link building best practices guide, which takes into account the subject, industry, and competitive landscape. And even then, the best practices cannot be cast in stone. Some years ago it was considered a best practice to submit your site's URLs to WebCrawler, Excite, and even Magellan. Who? Not long ago a link from DMOZ was considered a must.

43 Vote(s)

Pilo - I am a fan of Sphinn and generally find a bunch of good information and discussion there. Lately though I have noticed increasingly more SPAM submissions there. If I see Spam I report it right away and I hope others do the same. Unfortunately the problem seems to be getting worse though. I like to check in on Sphinn early in the morning and now it seems that I am trudging through more Spam than real posts. This is a problem. Sometimes the Spam is cleaned up quickly but far too often it stays alive for too long.

44 Vote(s)

oK... Now (the)Lisa is digging into the fray. I might just have to jump in with a rant myself in the comming days... so many rants, so little time... *sigh*Bruceclay.com - As you might imagine, I disagree with Jill. Taking a look around, I think we are absolutely at the point where it's Do or Die time for SEO standards. We don't need the perfect search engine optimization How To guide (though I'm sure Mahalo is working on that), but we do need to outline what SEO is and what it means to optimize a Web site. We need to establish best practices, what the risk is for abandoning them, and what all these different terms that we throw around actually mean.

59 Vote(s)
