I have been doing a lot of stumbling to blogs recently, to find out how to make mine better, and have been annoyed with the vast majority of them. Here are 4 reasons why.

I ablsolutely agree with the list.  Google ads drive me nuts!  I would love to make money like this on my sites but think it’s just too annoying and would piss people off more than anything.  Does anyone even click on them anyway?  I’ve just learned to ignore them when I’m browsing.

I agree about Google ads - the worst is when you go to a blog because you’re tracking a term through Google Alerts, and the *blogger* has lifted the content from someone else’s blog and delivers you to a page FULL of Google ads. Sploggers suck!I like lists, as long as the person has something new to contribute.

People do click Google ads and ads in general.  I put 1 Google ad per article on my blog. It’s usually placed so 1/2 appears above the fold with my browser. I want to be sure that a) people can always read the first paragraph before they hit the ad, but b) the ad is visible when someone reads the first 30 words, but decides maybe the ad is more interesting than the content. As for the rest: Anything popsup and I’m gone!  So far, no one has resized my browser window. If that becomes common, I’m sure someone will write a firefox extension deactivating the function that let someone do that!

Oh, don’t get me wrong - I know first hand how often people click google ads... it’s just when  google ads are given higher priority over good content - that’s when it bothers me.  I think my problem comes from just being annoyed that so many bloggers have becomes slaves to Google.  There are so many (better) ways to make money from a site rather than the few table scraps Google tosses you when you send traffic away from your site... to often much more crappy/non-relevant content. If you put the kind of links on your site that google ads do (without using google ads)... your page rank would go down thanks to tons of links that have nothing to do with your site at all... I think you just gave me my next blog post topic :)

I know google ads are annoying - but I made over $1000 in September from Adsense (on my free images / wallpaper site) - so I guess my visitors will just have to be a wee bit annoyed!
