Interesting article, however, I think it overlooks one important aspect: time from initial post. The half-life of a blog post has a very fast decay, so while it’s true that social media can delivery a big bump, the probability of it happening goes down pretty fast the more stale the post is.

@igrigorik Articles instantly gets rankings once they are submitted to social media networks and promoted properly.  They typically receive the highest daily "organic" visitors in the following days after the promotion.  CONTENT IS KING as always, so writing a quality article is key in receiving long tail traffic in the long term.
