"How long will this PageRank penalty last? Matt Cutts of Google said, “I expect that to remain for a while.” Any takers on what “a while” means?"I wouldnt be surprised if Google keep the PR penalty on google.co.jp for around 3 months. Of course google.co.jp is most welcome to file a reconsideration request to Google WebSpam Team which might help to shorten the duration of the said penalty :-)
I think this shows the power of online social media - would Google have penalised itself if the news of pay-per-review hadnt spread so quickly and so widely that it resulted in a groundswell of negative comments?
For the record and to be fair, Matt Cutts acted promptly once he was made aware of the problem with google.co.jp. Here are some of his relevant tweets:"......., Im checking on whats going on. Folks in Japan are in a different time zone, so it might take me a little while to find out." http://twitter.com/mattcutts/status/1193319430"......, my team isnt 100% done with the investigation on our side, but I would expect us to take action on this, not just apologize." http://twitter.com/mattcutts/status/1200074346"Google.co.jp PageRank is now ~5 instead of ~9. I expect that to remain for a while." http://twitter.com/mattcutts/status/1200910626"..... , it reflects less trust toward that domain." http://twitter.com/mattcutts/status/1201050186Keep up the good work, GOOG WebSpam Team. Youre making a difference :-)
I wait for "Google lays off Sergey Brin to cut founder costs by 50%".
So, thanks to this public relations exercise... ...will google.co.jp not rank first for "Google" in itself?...will google.co.jp not rank first for "Google Japan" in any Google search?...will revenues of google.co.jp from selling links on their home page take a hit?...will Googleplexers not trust their Japanese colleagues for a couple of months?...did Google prove anything to anybody? Its the most ridiculous and meaningless decision in possibly the whole history of Google.
The other question to ask, if no one really would have caught this and made a big deal out of it, would Google have? Doubtful.
I would love to hear more about the "less trust to the domain" factor. That might actually be a penalty. Losing PR isnt that big a deal unless youre selling links, not buying them.
Well, google.jp still ranks first for [google japan] when searched from google.co.uk so the PR penalty hasnt affected their ranking ability that badly. Seriously though, how is Google dropping the PR of a Google site going to make a jot of difference anyway? I know some people might use Google to search for Ask or Yahoo, but is anyone ever going to google (verb) Google (noun)? What would be more interesting would be to find out what, if any, punitive actions the other SEs take on google.jp for buying links. If Yahoo Japan reduces Googles rankings that might have more of an effect (assuming a similar pattern of Japanese users searching for a less widely used engine (google.jp) by using their countrys preferred engine (Yahoo).Matt Cutts putting Google Japan on the naughty step for a couple of months is just a nice display of public contrition for the sake of glossing over the negetive press this has brought from the SEO/Tech community. It wont be noticed by the world at large and it wont change anything.
