For those of you who don’t know, Google slapped Google Japan in the penalty box. Why you ask? Because Google Japan dared to venture into the dark world of paid posting. Is this a PR stunt?

I’m not sure it’s a PR stunt, I think they’ve made a mistake and are trying to recover this by applying consistency in the penalties normally received by website’s for similar actions.Although it doesn’t really effect them too much traffic wise, how many people will visit Google Japan via a search query anyway?

stutofts, you said, "by applying consistency in the penalties normally received by website’s for similar actions"but that’s not correct....they applied the "SELLING links penalty" via lowering the visiable toolbar measure. You’ll notice that this doesn’t effect rankings at all...only the green fairy dust in the toolbar. The penalty for BUYING links is a lowering of your rankings accross the board... someone in japan should search for google, and find it ranking between 40 and 80.  That would be consistant. There’s some great comments on Matt’s blog as well.http://www.mattcutts.com/blog/pointers-for-google-japan-paid-post-story/
