Ive been seeing changes that fit into this pattern but didnt put it together until reading this article (doh!). While I think this change will help Google maintain some credibility by listing sites you would expect to find in many searches, unless these big brands start providing more information on their sites, user satisfaction may suffer a bit. It wouldnt surprise me to see this change dialed back slightly as time progresses to find a nice balance of brand vs content.
Skitzzo, I totally agree with you. I would be interested to see if they are finding this on long tail terms. As search engine queries are getting longer according to hitwise, brands tend to be less relivant in these searches than the actual information.
Inspirational communication from SEOBook. As usual Aaron shows data and cites references that support his observations, creating a post that is not "opinion" and "summary informaton" like most SEO posts. I think the part behind the private membership is better than the public part, too, where it addresses Googles business model and the SEO approach to succeeding in the new environment.
I also started a thread at WMW a few days ago after noticing this too - http://www.webmasterworld.com/google/3854121.htm .
Great info! Weve been making the shift at our company as well. Focusing on branding as a part of the total SEO strategy is becoming more and more important. It will be interesting to see how positive and negative comments on the web play a factor. Since, overall, if your brand is mentioned then people are more aware of it. Thanks for the graphs.
Yes, quite an exceptional article with a logical overview. Well done.
This was bound to happen eventually.
@MikeDammann agreedHave to say I was in a similar mindset to Skittzo (ie in the didnt put it together until reading....). Will be interesting to see how this tranlates into longer tail searches - particularly given some of the research recently into user search behaviourPS. Great post again by SEOBook!!!
There are comments from Matt Cutts on Danny Sullivans Sphinn thread about this.
