Viral marketing. The term just sounds sinister, doesn’t it? Like its name implies, it’s a way of spreading your message like a virus from person to person. How do you do it? By creating content that begs to be shared with others. Sometimes, it’s a funny video. Other times, it’s a unique application that performs a really cool function.

I’d say what Hotmail did techincally isn’t Viral Marketing. It required little to no effort on Microsoft’s part, and they were just using their own property to advertise the service. Companies do that every day. Does Microsoft’s usage qualify as viral because it just reached a lot of people? Or was it actually viral, did people care about it, and did it create a buzz?
