Probably the most damning evidence yet that Twitter has burst into the mainstream. Times Online has published their list of the 50 most popular celebrities who have jumped onto the bandwagon. Stephen Fry (@stephenfry) tops the list but you can now follow everyone from Lance Armstrong (@lancearmstrong) to Questo of The Roots (@qoolquest).

They would have got extra points from me if they had differentiated between the "real" Twitter users and those who have the account looked after by their PR company. Looking at her stream, I would be amazed if Britney even knows she *has* a Twitter account. On a side note, has anyone tried sending tickets/promo gear to this list and seeing if they will Tweet out the info? :)

I think this is the biggest change we’ll see on Twitter in 2009- it becomes just another reflection of real world celebrity. Conversations we care about go underground (relatively invisible) unless some new twitter apps help uncover them. Or just super granular and niche like google results and the rest of the web already is.

@Brian That’s where search shines, I think. I often add people who were involved in a conversation which topic interests me.

@JeffMHoward - I feel your pain but Twitter is just about living up to the hype now IMO. Look at the audience reach and coverage in the mainstream press, as evidenced yet again in this article. That was the reason I submitted this, rather than the actual content. We’ve had twitter news on Sphinn for ages now and most of us are sick to death of it - but trust me, it’s only just begun.
