Of course search marketers were quick to try to capitalize on this new found way of marketing, and quickly social media optimization was born. The debates started just as quickly as this new marketing medium started on whether there was any true value for businesses in social media. Local search has proved there is great benefit from social media from a pure rankings stand point.

I think its interesting to see the importance placed on "web references" instead of links. I agree with this articles author that identity and authority are important to the success of Local Marketing, and if businesses arent harnessing the value of local search yet, they should recalculate their strategy.
There are a lot of ways to market for free including strategies for viral marketing. MySpace and FaceBook are just the tip of the iceberg.
