Directories are a good and easy source for links, but are they truely a good way to ’cut back’ as is suggested in the piece? I think there are other ways to cut back while still keeping the integrity of your link building plan...and not having to resort to just directories.

I think you should look at it as "Infrastructure" building and "infrastructure spending, to boost your links. These types of links are a good low level start to a link campaign, and can be a good foundation upon which to build. Of course, vmarker is right that there are anumber of other strategies to get links as well and that you shouldn’t JUST use directories, however there is a definate value to getting your "link infrastructure" in place.

I never suggested you "resort to just directories" in the article or anywhere else.  If you’re going to use them as part of your link mix, which I think is perfectly fine, ten expand your base and include the niche directories. And yes I do think the niche directories are a good way to ’cut back’", 98% of them are free unlike the general directories I listed (except the DMOZ) which are all paid.

This is a great reminder to all that your site is the sum of its parts. Try to recognize your site’s Holistic Link Potential. For each type of content you offer, link opportunities exist.  Folks are gaga to create video bait now, but overlook already existing content on their sites that are linkworthy.  Then again, does anyone remember camcentral?
