You and ‘SuperJenn’ were once pretty good friends, online. But one day you logged in and noticed that she’d axed you from her friends list. Shocked at first, you thought it must be some kind of accident. But after a few moments of soul searching… you realize that you probably over-engaged in one of the 11 behavioral triggers that can cause people to drop you as a friend:

There is much reality to what you say. People who brag are often seen as lofty. Guess we all should be humble.

I can’t agree with #6. But I wholeheartedly agree with #9. Those types are hard to deal with, because they don’t take criticism lightly and get offended when you say you’ll unfollow them due to their excessive amount of tweets.

I don’t think I agree with *any* of these rules, as evident by my Twitter account where I break each one of them several times a day. I don’t think people care *what* you tweet as much as they care *how* you tweet it.

Lisa,I wouldn’t say that any of these are "rules" - it’s just suggestions for people who are just starting out,  trying to build followers and are sensitive about losing them. Some people read the "What are you doing?" prompt on Twitter and never get past that point, ya know ? ;)"I just ate a bannana. It was close to perfectly ripe. No brown spots."

THX, as always, XLent content rules. Still, good manners will help you build your rep.

I agree with Lisa. I do believe many of us are probably guilty of all 11 at some point. It’s a great list to have so when you Tweet and 20-30 people go AWOL, you can cross reference the list and see which of the 11 got you Unfollowed. 1. Banality - I thought that was the premise of Twitter?2. Narcissim - Twitter is a Narcissists tool.3. Self Promotion - I do believe that covers most of us here.4. Pushing an Agenda - Hard to tell when this occurs.5. Negativity - This is the fuel for the fire. Some people are known for their negativity and it works for them believe it or not.6. Lack of Reciprocity - This ain’t no link exchange damnit. I hated to see this one in the list. I’m not going to Unfollow someone because they don’t follow me. In Protected mode, maybe. Not in public mode.7. Politics and Religion - Two things you save for another time. Twitter is not the outlet for that unless that is your gig and that of your Followers.8. Recycling - Freakin Twitter has become a Green Platform. I’ve seen more RT noise than I care to think about. I won’t get involved with those RT frenzies anymore. If I do, I’m stripping all the leeches and paying homage to the first RT.9. Overload - Ummm, that would be me. I’m still trying to break the "fora" mentality and trim things back to 140 while taking a breath inbetween. :)10. Bragging - Oh come on, we all do it to some degree. Twitter is for that. You brag with your friends don’t you? You listen to them brag. It’s all about sharing accomplishments. I don’t see too much wrong with bragging. If you overdo it, then sure, Unfollow.11. Direct Hostility or Attack - Heh, I take it you don’t follow some of the people I do? While not something you want to become known for, I’ve seen plenty of people blow off Twitter Steam. It’s like a little tea kettle whistling at 140 characters. They come and go. Some of them are rather hiliarious and can liven up a Twitter Timeline in a heartbeat.Great piece by the way. You hit on every single thing that each of us is guilty of to some extent. :)
