Sites that have been live and active on the web for many years attract a substantial number of links when well promoted. But, what about those sites that are brand new?

Generally when we have a site,we will creat a sitemap and submit it to the search engine webmaster,then go to social bookmarks,forum.It could take you some backlinks.

Regarding the press releases, I think that as you stated they can work as long as you have something news worthy to say. The problem is too many people try to put them out just to get links with content that is pretty much garbage. Unless there is something compelling within the PR your wasting time and money.
