One of the most common misconceptions many clients have is that SEO is a destination; that you can do a few things and you’ll reach the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow... Inevitably, I have to break the bad news to the client: SEO isn’t that simple.

I still think seo is a destination, the destination is the top 20 sites if not 10! You are probably not that good so you’re trying to make up for it by saying stuff like this to your clients. This sounds like a long winded excuse, if you can’t get top 10 then you shouldn’t be getting paid for this.
