Pageoneresults is taking his exploration of Twitter even further with a look at the 250 character SuperTweet. While Twitter limits the viewable tweet to the famous 140 characters the true maximum is 255. He’ll be experimenting this weekend with the SuperTweet and its indexing potential.

Before this gets labeled as a hack, I should explain that during my research and testing, I discovered that Twitter supports both a Short and Long Version of messaging. The messages presented during these Long Version Tweets clearly indicate that the system supports it. Of course you can "SEE" the Long Version on the web. Originally I referred to them as Evergreen Tweets and have since relabeled them as PermaTweets as that is what they really are in the overall scheme of things. I don’t expect this to become a norm. I surely hope Twitter wouldn’t classify it as a hack as their system is set up to support 255 characters. BTW, I say 250 because there are 5 spaces reserved for 3 dots and 2 spaces at the truncation point. Stay at 250 and below to avoid truncation. Anything after that ... point is gone.

This could be used by black hat SEOs to load a bunch of keyword-rich but meaningless text after the 140 characters.  If done with a bit of finnesse (not just mumbo-jumbo) the tweet could rank for a good search term, and people would follow the link in the "recommendation" (that’s what a Tweet would appear to be) and that’s even more effective than if someone found their page directly via Google or Yahoo.  I expect there will be some spamming as a result.

@pageoneresults Sorry my first impression was that this was a hack rather than part of the twitter setup. Although I’d done "supertweets" by accident before, once I got used to Twitter my messages stayed on the 140 limit. Going over the 140 limit was an indication of a newbie mistake. It will be interesting to see how this can be used - if at all. My gut feeling is that material "below the fold" or after the expand click looses a huge number of page views. It would be interesting to track two links, one above and one after to see the %. I suppose in some way you can use this as a "more" feature. If the initial tweet pricks someone’s attention then the links after the jump would have extra value to convert (make them perform the action you wanted). I’ll try and few things this weekend with the #SuperTweet tag and see what you think.

255 would be the maximum. If you hit the 251, anything from 250 onward will be truncated and gone forever. That’s why I recommend you stay within the 250 range. Those last 5 spaces are reserved for 2 spaces and 3 dots, the ellipsis. I’ve also been testing this via DM. There is a slight difference here in that the full 250 characters is displayed, the message is seamless, no chunking < I think that is the correct term. I know I’ve freaked a couple of people out with me 250 character DMs. They were like "HEY! How did you do that!" Try it! You get a little more breathing room when needed. I wouldn’t get carried away as SMS charges may apply for some. A SuperTweet consumes 1 API Call Up and 2 API Calls Down. That is more efficent than 2 Tweets which would be 2 Up and 2 Down. So you save 1 API Call in the process. Keep in mind that my testing is very limited but I seem to have gotten IT 99% of the time. You have to spend a little more time with a SuperTweet which many won’t do. That’s good, it will keep the use of this to a minimum. Many don’t want to read more than 140. And, many more cannot think of more than 140. :)

255 Char DMs were still possible through the "Message XYZ" Twitter web form up to a few weeks ago (the char count would go to -115), but then this was turned off, much to my chagrin. So @pageoneresults, do I take it that you’ve been sending these 250 char DMs directly through the Twitter API?

Good day Alex. Everything still appears to be working as I outlined in my article. In fact, I just constructed a SuperTweet #ST just for you. Check it... http://twitter.com/pageoneresults/status/1430713923
