I'm sitting here in my running shorts just coming in off the beach and was going to look for some locations of the California fires. The smell of smoke in my area is not that strong but the whole sky is in a haze that makes everything look as if you're wearing orange colored sunglasses.
I get home and notice a post on digg with some links to maps of the fires, only to discover the post was created by Danny Sullivan and posted on searchengineland. Small world!
The best part of Dannys post is that he is on "vacation" which means I can print it out and show it to my wife since we just came home from "vacation" in SanFran where I was jotting down notes of potential top ten lists and taking photos of local landmarks.
Hey Danny.
Thanks for the mention of our ResourceShelf compilation. We have added several more links including live streams from tv and radio stations in the San Diego area, NOAA weather radio, and the daily, and always interesting, NASA Earth Observatory Newsletter.
Stay safe.
This message is coming from my Treo 700P using PDANet into my laptop from a moving train outside NYC.
Google just wrote about a few sweet maps, too:

We just moved into a new office down in Irvine and I cannot even begin to describe my trip down there yesterday (I have been an LA 'native' for over a decade so I am now commuting to the OC office a few days a week). It reminded me of the scene in The Matrix just after the humans intentionally scorched the earth to prevent the machines from accessing the sun to create solar power, right before they discovered a new living thermal energy source to extract power from (ie us).
The disgusting part about the whole situation is how arsonists intentionally lit five separate fires to get their rocks off…unbelievable!
there are some crazy slideshows on the local news sites:

What always strikes me about maps of newsworthy events like this is that they stop abruptly at the U.S. border. Are there no fires in Mexico? Don't the same dry conditions prevail there?
Living in San Diego (thankfully not in the fire zones ... yet), I have been using several of these maps for the last few days. I think the best one for my needs (trying to see if areas where friends live have been evacuated, figuring out which roads were closed, and finding evacuation centers to drop off supplies) was the Google map maintained by KPBS.
I am just really glad the smoke finally cleared so I could get out and ride some bikes with my family again.

PS: @Danny - I could have sworn I saw you on the strand this weekend (I have a rental up on 17th street) and was going to say 'ello but didn't want to disturb the pumpkin carving party :).
Heh -- Ryan, that WAS us! You should have said hi!
LOL!
I really wanted to you but you looked pretty busy scoopin' out them pumpkin guts :)(:
I hoped you enjoyed your vacation.
