While many companies pay attention to their online reputation - what comes up when people search for the company by name - they often fail to check out the online reputation of their employees. I know that some may feel that is an invasion of privacy, but in this day and age where people want to know who they are doing business with, it is not uncommon to “Google” someone to find out more about them.

Social Media can be a reputation nightmare for some. I’m watching the rise and fall of various Social Media Maven now and it is rather interesting. Many have overlooked the power of their profiles, the networks, etc. and someone could easily come along and pluck them right out of those positions. I know, I’ve done it. Many others around here have done it. Piss someone off in the wrong space and you’re toast for that day. Don’t worry though, most get over it quickly. It’s a "right now" kind of thing and then old news. This would definitely be a good time to give a shout out to the folks at... http://CheckUsernames.com/ I typically don’t recommend many tools but the one above is by far at the top of my list when assisting individuals with their Social Media ventures. I usually send them there first with instructions on how to do the top 10. Many times I end up doing it myself. Kudos to the g33ks behind that one, way cool and extremely valuable in the Reputation Management Toolbox. One thing to always remember. Anything you post to a public timeline is now forever and a day. Choose carefully when being public about your career, your lifestyle, etc. At some point, it may be used against you. I’ve been there done that one too. It SUCKs and you learn from your mistakes.
