I do believe one part of the Twitter attraction is that they are not owned by Google. If, and I think it is a BIG IF, Google were to buy Twitter, there will be some fallout. There are just too many people in the mindset right now that Google is not good for all things Internet. Their business model over the years has been to purchase any and all upcoming technology, trends, etc. They dont want anyone competing in their space, not if they can help it. Look at Googles acquisition timeline. I stopped tracking it in 2007. Up to that point, the signals were very clear. Google was buying everything that captured public attention. What do you think would happen to Twitter if Google were to buy them?
Hmmm, there are different stories on this out there. This particular one states that the "talks of acquisition" rumor are not true. http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090403/sorry-to-get-you-all-a-twitter-but-google-is-not-in-late-stage-talks-to-acquire-the-hot-microblogging-service/"More importantly, said another source about the idea of an imminent acquisition or serious acquisition or even early talks: Seriously, no negotiations, no deal, nada."
Interesting huh ... seems like a logical extension and good move for Google. I still dont want to see it happen though, so I do hope theyre talking only on a partnership level. Youre right though ... they seem to want to buy any credible threat.
