Yep I’d totally agree with this and have thought the same for quite a while.  In a way Google is moving back (thankfully) to providing results for authority sites first and foremost, which, let’s face it, was why the ’internet’ was created in the first place!  Probably will kill off some of the spam websites out there as well... which can only be a good thing!

Agreed. I think the engines have forgotten what it is their supposed to do for the past couple of years - give me the best results, not the greatest number or diversity. That means you probably only need index a few thousand sites to give great results for most queries.
