Google is an factor that is outside of your control. Sure, you can follow their rules or adjust your behavior to fit in but that still doesn’t put Google within your palm. What do good entrepreneurs do with uncontrollable factors? They create what-if contingency plans to accommodate for possible loss.

I am starting a book as to whether there will be more topics posted about PR this week, than there were topics posted about BlogRush two weeks ago.

It’s another of the myriad changes that Google makes. Even for sites who weren’t effected, it’s another lesson in the importance of not putting all of your eggs in Google’s basket.

From the article: Stop complaining. Pagerank is simply a webmaster fetish. It’s a inside joke that’s gone too far.Nice one, Maki.

Just because you can’t control something doesn’t mean it doesn’t matter. I agree that people tend to obsess over it too much but as long as third party services (TLA etc) use PageRank (not to mention the general public some of whom may buy advertising etc) it will matter.

"but as long as third party services (TLA etc) use PageRank (not to mention the general public some of whom may buy advertising etc) it will matter. "---therein lies the problem....why would google who is waging war on paid links hand them a valuation tool.I agree pagerank will soon be the equivalent of cyber-yeti.  I did like this part "Aunt Mary or Uncle Joe will give a toss about it? They’ll still type in the URL or click on the bookmark icon faithfully because they want to get the info-fix they need." --we all get so deep we forget to come up for air.....chances are your aunt an uncle never type teh url or bookmark the page...they just go to google and type "washington post"  Every time I tell my dad to type in an url to show him something....straight to the search bar not the address bar.  Heck Uncle Joe probably has cool search from installing weather bug; he may never find it.

On the other hand, factors like actively looking for advertisers who care about conversions/branding/traffic, getting more traffic and optimizing for visitors are things you can easily improve from your side. Why obsess about PR drops and increases? I don’t know any other third party services (except TLA and paid blogging networks) who really care that much about PageRank. After the fiasco yesterday and all the stuff Google has been doing, I doubt PR is still a dominant factor to consider when it comes to monetizing a site. To make somewhat of an understatement.. people are paranoid about buying or selling links for PR or search benefits now.

I always love the irony of these threads. You are only keeping the buzz going longer by doing this. Here is the cycle...1. Something unimportant comes out and someone makes it important. (often a big name)2. Rabble Rabble Rabble3. A big name says we shouldn’t talk about it. (and grabs a bunch of free traffic)4. Rabble Rabble Rabble5. Rabble Rabble Rabble6. Rabble Rabble Rabble7. Things finally die down
