Great article. Hopefully corporate America will read it, take note, and let who know how to engage lead them along the way. One of my most frustrating experiences was trying to get a buyin from very old school managers that didnt get the web, SEO, or social media. They wanted to have approvals for everything and didnt want to be in any way transparent. They also didnt think it was worth it to have an employee invest time engaging the community as a "voice". I even showed them a video where an exec from one of the top competitors in their space was interviewed in the mainstream media discussing why they were embrcing social media. Needless to say, their competitors still outperform them in Social Media. My only satisfaction was knowing that I did the right thing by making recommendations. Overall, the online marketing plan was not a success because of their fear of what they didnt know - and subsequent fear of letting someone who knew how to make it happen move their business in a direction where they had no control.
This is a good article. I agree with many of the points. Especially the theme that traditional corporations have a hard time with social media because they are used to traditional advertising where its all about bravado. As the author points out, social media is about relationships and community. This is a completely different mindset. And when you run into a social site with your advertising guns-a-blazzin, you turn off a majority of the crowd. But still, you can just see the corporations eyeing the social media sites. And I know they are confused. Heck, I can barely figure out how to Twitter and Im knee-deep in the "latest technology". Imagine how a VP - Marketing must feel. Anyway - Good read.
