The "sky is falling" malarkey on Page Rank recently not only shows that a lot of sites are putting too many eggs in the Google basket, but it also shows (if they're a SEO consultant) that they might be doing the same for their clients. Tsk tsk.

@toprank: seriously.  people need to wake up and love social media.

@yeepage: that's pretty funny.  Not sure why, but that just triggered that weird old page about "Hello my future girlfriend"

Stumbleupon is good for getting hammered with traffic but it doesn't bring home the bacon.

@Eavesy: what about sponsored SU?

One of my clients has tried it, I don't know weather or not he got business but he wasn't amazed with the performance. I think the sponsored SU thing is still in it's infancy and it will take some time before SU start getting it right.

I love SU. But Eavesy is right, it's not nearly as conversion friendly as search.

@eavesy & chartwell: for sure.  Sponsored SU is only getting it's start now.

I remember seeing SU quite a while ago and not thinking much of it.  Problem back then was that there were not enough users and content.  These days it is picking up quickly, so SU should be planning on better paid stuff.

I'm having too much fun with Stumble to worry about page rank.

Social media is going to convert more like content because that is what it is. It will drive more traffic than contextual advertising because of the flocking factor NowSourcing wrote about (i.e. most people are followers, sheep, lemmings).

As ppc costs continue to escalate while traffic quality declines, diversifying to as many traffic sources as possible is priority one. An ideal business model will be to rely as little on any one source as possible with 10% or less per source as an ambitious target.

I have a number of clients who are start-ups looking to show momentum to potential investors.  SU is perfect for these guys.

@urbanwrit: right on.

@flyingrose: well put.  Adsense tries to target in around what text is relavent on pages too.

@andrewsho: for sure.  SU can get things moving.

In my personal website i have never optimised it. But i have made social bookmarking for it. Through Social Bookamrking I am getting everyday 150 average visitors on my site. From this 150 there are approx 100 visitors comes from Stumbleupon from all over the world.

Conversion? If get get 100 visitors via Google and 1000 via StumbleUpon on a given page SU can convert only 1/10 as often to reach the same performance.

@gunjanpandya: your stats are probably true with a lot of folks using SU and other social media.

@onreact: true, conversions can be hard.  But sometimes, social media can step in and have other benefits, e.g. RSS subscriptions.  You can also get more than 1000 visitors via social media in a hurry when something really gets popular.
