Great article - especially the part about shutting up and not whining. Almost everyone I know who has any money has done it by working day and night for weeks, months, and/or years to become an "overnight success".
This is a really good post, spot on with regard to the attitudes of the nations majority. Everyone needs to get off their asses and do something about it.
LOL, I love it. Everyone blames the recession instead of just working harder and making it happen. I cant tell you how many people I know that have that attitude.
Wow. Have you been listening in on my conversations? My mantra recently has been "be an opportunist, not a complainer"! There ARE jobs out there and there ARE opportunities out there. Someones spending money, so why not step up and be the thing they spend it on! Ive gotten so sick of hearing people whine that I had to separate myself from the whiners and surround myself with positive people who flourish in the face of a challenge. As for me, Ive had the best year yet! Started a couple online ventures for myself... Booming! Helped my bf start a new business when he got sick of being laid off - marketed his cute little butt online and guess what? BOOMING! Oh, and that little SEO firm that I have in Cincinnati? Guess what? BOOOOOMING!!! Yea baby, times are good. And what do I do with all that extra scratch? I go spend it at all those places that are slashing prices because of the recession. So, bravo on a fantastic article. You nailed it!
I am surrounded by people (in my neighborhood) blaming the economy for everything bad in their life. Its about time someone wrote a post telling them to suck it up and make it happen. This last year has been explosive for us and that is during a "bad economy" Lisa is spot on - shut up and go make it happen!
"Or invest more time discussing Ashton Kutcher and his one million followers publicity stunt? Seriously?"Maybe we should be discussing how The Lisa can get her pretty little hands on her Hot Army Guy instead? :)Im happy most SEOs learned not to whine about The Google 24/7 :) But yeah, are you gotta play hostage or are you gonna find your way out of a paper bag like John McClane? That said, when are people gonna stop blaming Bush for everything? Probably never :P Bunch of freakin whiners!
Well said! My 2 mantras: 1) tell me in 25 words or less and 2) Put up, or shut up! Remind me to send you a copy of my No Whining button to wear at all times (The word Whining with a red circle and / through it). Cheers on getting down to stainless steel tacks!
No Whining? This No Whining sign? http://www.SEOConsultants.com/just-say-no/images/no-whining-480.gif I have a whole bunch of NO Signs. That is just one of them. I think this one applies too. :) http://www.SEOConsultants.com/just-say-no/images/no-mediocrity-480.gif
Spoken like a true capitalist.
Great post I am willing to bet half of the community at Sphinn loves this because they are entrepreneurs
Its an incredibly offensive title but then I guess that is the intention - link baitIts Not An Offensive Title, Its Just Written By An SEO ConsultantYou can be an opportunist and a complainer
@LisaBarone Well written. Well said. Everyone else.. stop griping and get to work.
Can we use this for the innumerable complaints of SEOs stuck on page 2 of the SERPS? Its NOT Google, YOU Just Suck.
I too am having a banner year surpassing all our projections so far, so I certainly undertstand the concept of not blaming anything or anyone else for my own issues and controlling my own destiny but I do think the post and responses kind of illustrate how SEO as an idustry tends to be a little self-centered and view the world from their perspective while showing little grasp or understanding of the real problems that others face. Im thrilled with the success my company is having and in a large sense due to the negative perception of a global economic meltdown but that does not in anyway diminish my empathy for the people and families who have been hit by the realities of a coountry facing multi-trillion debt and having its loans called in.This forces companies to lay off people who have done nothing wrong in their job. It forces companies to put expansion and construction projects on hold. It forces banks to stop lending working capital and it forces employers to make the kind of decisions that have a real impact on the lives of the people who depend on them for the survival of their families. Thats a powerful thing and can be very traumatic. If you have spent the last 5-10-or more years doing a particulr kind of job that has afforded you and your family a comfortable lifestyle only to wake up one morning to find yourself unceremoniously given new career opportunities, it can be a little stressful.Even for those lucky few who have the ability to envision enduring the slings and arrows associated with being an entrepenuer, realizing the potential market for your "great idea" is all of a sudden much smaller than yesterday, it can be a little daunting.I just think calling everyone that blames the economy for their problems a whiner does not alter the fact that the enonomy actually is causing a lot of problems that scare the shit out of a lot of people.I wish as an industry, SEO was a little more broad minded and able to appreciate the differeces in how different people respond to different situations. Keep in mind that the world of SEO too is changing rapidly and many of us speaking here today may not be here in another 12 months. How are we going to feel when we look for support in the form of understanding and were told to stop whining and work harder? If we dismiss people so easily, we cheat oursleves of the opportunity of learning about human nature and how to best capitalize on that nature. I believe all people have value that can be validated and exploite err I mean employed, even the ones who are freaked out and seeking a way to understand something bad happening to them.As SEO changes and some choose to give up, they still have skills that could be a huge asset to many online marketing companies, (what seo will be called in another 2 years), AND at an equitable wage. How are we going to effectively evaluate their skills sets if we see them as a whiner? See them as people facing a real problem and opportunities magically appear.heh?massa
Im amazed at how people take this post completely the wrong way. Maybe the post was too baity for its own good, but that said, the message is simple. If you got it tough and youre working your ass off Lisa isnt talking about you. If youre not making ends meet but youre sitting in front of the TV eating doritos from Thursday to Monday on your ass whining about Bush and how he screwed up your life, well Lisa Is talking about you. If youre dealt a crappy hand in life or had a rough childhood or if you got picked on in junior high or if youre black thinking no white guy will hire you (something I used to hear constantly from a good friend of mine) Lisas talking about you.Being born black is a lame excuse for not trying but reality weighs so heavy some people eventually learn to accept what some people want out of them - utter failure. Once you accept that "reality" then you really are doomed. Obamas election was monumental because it showed people like my friend who sold weed because he thought hed never be hired anywhere that he is wrong.Being too "realistic" (black prez? No fucking way) and accepting reality (its harder for blacks to get ahead in life) can make you accept failure, to stop hoping, and to live life the way other people excepts you to live it. Sometimes its better to be naive. Sometimes its better to hope for the impossible because who knows it might just happen. But it wont happen ever if you dont believe it.Lisa said in her comments that she has a serious speech problem. What won my respect is she doesnt let that be an excuse to fail. We all have plenty of excuses to fail. I do. The only takeaway here is if you are one of those people that stopped hoping and stopped trying and stopped believing that anything is possible and is reduced to sitting on your ass whining or flipping burgers for the safety of paying your bills (if youre not shes not talkin about you), stop making excuses, stop feeling sorry for yourself and do something.
During the last great depression, the one that took place in 1929, not 2009, we can atill read of those who complain that there were plenty of jobs out there and that the homeless were just "lazy". I did OK in 2008 and made more money than in 2007, still it is hard. With real estate prices down you cannot get loans using your house as an ATM anymore.
So harsh.
Wheew, great article! Thanks pageoneresults. You helped me come up with an answer on how I can become succesful.
