"I previously discussed why rankings are a poor measure of success, but only touched upon how to instead use web analytics to measure SEO success. My hope is that once you have a good grasp of what to review and how to use that info, you’ll be more inclined to wean yourself (and your clients) off rankings reports once and for all!"

Wheres the numbers!Caption on a picture of Jill shaking her finger. :)If only you had NOT pushed G-Analytics. Sigh.Rather like learning to drive an automatic then calling yourself a professional race driver...I rank customising, parsing, and analysing log files as basic SEO knowledge/ability. Perhaps I have my bar set too high? But still well worth a sphinn.
@iamlost I think you might want to give Google Analytics another look. Why spend hours parsing huge log files to get the info you need in this day and age? Of course, there is info on log files you cant get from GoAn, but this article was for those people who dont even know where to begin to see how their SEO work is doing, so its the bare minimum. I cant even imagine those folks with log files when GoAn already overwhelms them!
This is a fast moving target. With changes to the Google Referrals strings, it looks like well soon be able to get exact rank and see traffic change as position changes. While rankings without click throughs and conversions are meaningless, being able to monitor how rankings impact success is going to be very powerful.Open Source script to enable exact position of the result on a Google SERP (and page number for everybody else) via Google Analytics eventing at: http://bit.ly/seoPositionPlus
I agree andyed! I havent had time to try out any of the scripts, but might look into yours this weekend. I believe that those types of rankings--when you know theyve clicked through--can certainly be valuable and Im excited that Google is making that info available. Was hoping theyd work it into GoAn soon.
javascript counters are very bad. Many users have noscript firefox add-on, firewalls and etc...I prefer server counters only
