It seems to me that the quality of some CMS products is getting worse, not better. In the rush to add multiple bells and whistles, the usability, crawlability, and SE friendlyness has been dumped.

Sphunn with a vengeance!
Most CMS programs are poor in SEO abilities. What we need is an SEO expert to build a new CMS, yes one optimized to score wins in Search Engines. I know about plugins, but they are like a band aid on a gaping sore.
Thanks for your support folks!Related article: http://sphinn.com/story/113434
Yeah, mere plugins wont cut the mustard for a truly professional environment: simply not enough functionality and scalability for big corporate sites.Great article, Sebastian, as usual!
Im a CMS programmer and an SEO. I have looked at many of the CMS products out there and cant believe how SEO is never considered. We custom build our CMS for each client with SEO in mind. A description and screenshot of the CMS can be seen in this recent YouMoz post:http://www.seomoz.org/ugc/how-a-site-redesign-increased-traffic-by-515
Sebastian, great article at the right time, since my team is building a CMS/Cart from scratch, and we should take care not to forget those valuable points.
To be honest, WordPress is an awesome CMS for a fairly wide (but by no means comprehensive) range of uses.
