Yep, buying old domains is another way to go about getting links, going through the listings at the DMOZ is good starting point for this method (hint)  If you don’t have the $ to buy domains or the time to keep those sites up, directory listings are one easy, fast and relatively inexpensive way to increase your link counts.  Another reason I’m keen on getting links in the better directories is based on some things I’ve read in recent patents granted to a certain engine. Seems they’re looking into ways to incorporate editorial opinion into ranking results and specifically mention a handful of well known general directories by name.  We don’t know if they’re using it of course but makes sense that they’re looking for authority and relevance indicators outside of their bots.Search the USPTO for "supporting editorial opinion" and you’ll find them.
