I don’t think anyone would debate the importance of on-page factors.  The link-building just requires a lot more work, so it occupies SEO minds to a greater extent.

I don’t think anyone would debate the importance of on-page factors. People do debate it though. Was nice to see Ralph clearing stating it! (Sometimes I feel like a lone wolf on that topic!)

The first on-page factor is good content. The first off-page factor is promotion. Together it’s a "build something epic and they will promote it" kind of thing.Hard work thus less popular as SEO "technique" :)
