Interesting perspective... I asked in LinkedIn if having the GAP or Yahoo Ambassador certifications was of value. Most repliers to my question said that it didn't really matter to them (as a client looking at an agency being certified or not), and that it was more about results.
may need to log in to LI to view this, but here's the link to the Q & the answers.

Courts don't certify lawyers, so who needs a search engines validation?
Results speaks volume, over a shiny little badge.
And I am not sporting their brand on my site when I have to pay for it.
I advertise their business only when paid for it...so to speak.
Peace!
Courts actually DO certify lawyers. Lawyers go through law school (a post-graduate degree) and to be a practicing lawyer, one must pass a bar examination that is endorsed by the state bar, with discretion by the courts to accept those who pass the bar examination.
Search engine marketing is in its infancy as a career and the path to becoming a search marketer cannot be compared to the path of becoming an attorney.
Great summation of related info. Thanks.
And I think certification is always important when credibility questions arise. It may or may not be cited by clients, but I think it is part of the buying process in the early stages of qualifying who/who not to work with. Particularly in a world where we're always looking for ways of distinction in business.
One thing not mentioned are other requirements for the GAP program. I'm an in-house PPC manager, and I tried to get into the program; however, the credit card we were using at the time on our account had the name of my former boss on it, who apparently is a GAP herself. I could not get into the program because of this. The credit card was changed after she left, and I tried to get in again. Now I can't because our developer is associated with the account as a Client Manager (for the API) - which you have to be in order to become a GAP, and which you can't have more than one of on a single account.
