If you’re planning to move your site to a new domain, use the Change of Address tool to tell Google about your new URL. If this is old news, I sure didn’t see it anywhere.

Note that when I went through the process I got a message that said "Hm. Something isn’t right. We’re checking into it now." - so perhaps this isn’t fully flushed out.

Still, a way to migrate domain names will be a welcome aid for those of us who have to suffer through it from time to time!

SEO’ing during a domain move gives all of us headaches.  I hope that they iron out the difficulties soon with the tool.  I received a note today from Google saying that they were working on the issues now.

Nice info Scott.  I was not aware of this tool until now.Looks like the new URL must be verified first, which makes sense.  I’ll certainly dig into this a little deeper.  Anything that makes moving a site to a new domain easier is a blessing IMO.

Yeah, thanks for posting this.Looks like a really handy tool for business owners, Google should draw more attention to it (once the kinks are worked out, of course).

Solution: The issue I had was because I had only verified the www-version of the old domain.  You must verify both the www and non-www version of the old domain.  Hopefully Google will fix this issue too...but for now, it works.
