Glenn Gabe’s thoughts about people currently 55 and older and social networks: "Although I wish the numbers were better, I think 80% will never adopt social networking. I think 15% will be interested, but run into barriers and be confused with the best way to use social networking sites like Facebook. Then I think 5% will truly get it and benefit from its power. "

I agree Ann. My mother will be this month 65 years old, and she uses facebook on a daily basis.

I think sometimes we might not give this 55+ generation enough credit, given time, they will also adapt to social networking trends.  In general most generations do not sit still, but evolve overtime as their environment changes.

I was at a party over the holiday weekend where the majority of people were in the 45+ age bracket and Facebook was the hot topic of conversation.  My parents are 55+ and they’ve all recently joined Facebook.  I think when the non-tech audience and older generations adopt social media, it’s truly gone mainstream - youngsters are typically first to bat, so stands to reason that the older generations would be the largest growing segments.

The internet is what?  - twenty years old? So the people who have been using it (and making it) for the last twenty years are in their 40s, 50s and 60s. So why is there still an assumption that it’s a ’youth’ medium?Facebook did initially launch itself as that - it was aimed at college kids  - so to some users maybe it hasn’t shaken that off. But other types of social network - are they all about the kids? Look at the most popular twitterers - in the UK it’s Stephen Fry  - aged 50+.Who else is mega-popular on Twitter- Oprah, Demi Moore, Mc Hammer, Lance Armstrong - they’re not teenagers, I suspect most of their followers aren’t either.
