To me it seems clear that the danger in blogs, and to a greater extent Social Media, is when people (companies) use these mediums in unauthentic ways. If you care and invest yourself in meeting people, providing good content, and being authentic, then I think you can avoid the risk of blogs and social media.
Meh. I think its worth noting that a blog with a poor communication policy is a risky proposition, but the only blog "risk" for most businesses is that no one is going to read their blog. If you weigh that risk against the SEO benefits, theres no reason NOT to blog (assuming the cost is low enough) the vast majority of the time.
"if you use a blog solely for SEO and not to actually educate" Jennifer - I believe a blog can be used for SEO as well as to educate users at the same time. A good SEO campaign should include content which users will like and not just a bunch of keywords and links to the companys products and services.
I agree with your concept sporkmarketing, but there is a very real danger of Brand damage if your blog is done without a real investment of providing something to the users. The social media world may not be anywhere as close as influential as the people in it would like to think, but they are very well organized and vocal. If a blog is cutting corners, providing false information, or just lame, it will reflect badly on your brand, and thats not worth and SEO tradeoff. Like you said, in a bad blog the best case is that no one reads it, but there are plenty of stories of brands being trashed on social media because of their lack of understanding when entering the medium.
MiguelGomez - Fair enough. Im one of those "no publicity is bad publicity" kind of people, but I think youre correct in that some businesses would suffer from a half-hearted attempt at blogging.
You know the more I think about it, I think your on to something too. Maybe it depends more on the company and what they do. I think we are too early in this new arena to tell for sure in either case, and your probably right that the end result is probably somewhere in the middle.Good thoughts.
