Google is hitting the streets of San Francisco next week — with at least one high-powered supporter in tow — to talk to small/local businesses about Google products and services. The event is called “Favorite Places,” and Google will have San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom and other “San Francisco trendsetters” show their favorite local businesses — presumably ones they found on Google Maps.

Matt’s critique of the oddness of Google reaching out to new local business owners when they haven’t yet authetically communicated with the ones already in their index is really on target. Excellent post!

Google wants ad money from local businesses, but once it gets their money it seems to totally leave them in the lurch when it comes to helping them with the problems with Google Maps.  The sad thing with regard to Googles reference in the Google groups forum is that Yahoo Local is giving direct customer service.
