Loving the new layout & My Sphinn looks like it'll be very useful, but I've noticed a couple of things:
  • Some of my comments are reported as 1 day old - they're not, I was sick yesterday
  • I'm sure that I've had some of my submissions go hot but they're not reported, nor are my desphinns. I wonder if the submissions are being confused with "went hot", my profile says I have 8 submissions and I'm sure I have more.
  • The "profile recently viewed by" data is currently blank.
  • Searching throws a PHP error if at least one result is found:
Fatal error: Call to a member function count() on a non-object in /var/www/html/sp/sphinn.com/system/application/views/front/sposts.php on line 221
  • The graphical buttons on the feeds page are 404
  • Sphinn Live is very cool - can we have a feed please?  :-)
Keep up the good work.

Oh, and lists in comments don't get bullet points (they do in the editor though).

I've lost all my submissions - probably because they were trash anyway. Nice revamp.

Yuck, at least one of my articles that had 50+ sphinns lost it- www.searchenginepeople.com/blog/the-6-spheres-of-social-media-marketing.html/ and the link to sponsorship pdf on the right side there is a 404

I see Report Spam on comments, but can't find the button to report spam for a submission.

It doesn't look particularly different to the previous version in my opinion, I thought that the site was not going to be using the Pligg platform, I may be mistaken though.

It's nice, ultimately am more interested in what's happened behind the scenes as to limit the amount of spam that gets submitted on here. Ultimately, if this is reduced I will start using the site again as it won't be so time consuming.

Visually though, it's nice.

Although I too have lost all my submissions, hot topics e.t.c.

Are these dead? Should we take them off of our blogs....?

New design looks very good, nice work guys.

Main bug is the loss of history, only six pages of homepage stories - so at the moment the number of "topics gone hot" for each profile is inaccurate.

It would also be good to get the list of top users back once this is fixed.

I'm loving the feel of the new design... it feels cleaner.

One bug:When clicking on "who sphunn this" sphinn's seem to be duplicated. For example on this story: http://sphinn.com/story/121522/ there are 13 sphinns, but 18 people are appearing in the "who sphunn this" due to duplications.

the search feature seems to be broken - here is the error message: Fatal error: Call to a member function count() on a non-object in /var/www/html/sp/sphinn.com/system/application/views/front/sposts.php on line 221

There is no spam button to delete spam. Here come all the V!@GRA peddlers to our social network. It seems every morning I would hit the spam button like at least three times, and some times the whole what's new seems filled with ads for - vacation homes, payday loans, pharmaceuticals, and everything except SEO.

Echoing Gamerk's comment here, but on my profile page my "Topics Submitted", "Topics Gone Hot" and "Comments Made" fields all show "0"... I promise I contributed more than that :P

Also, I tried to update some of the details in my profile page (it seems to have me as only being 10 years old) and also lost one of my blog feeds. Whenever I click on modify profile and save, however, these changes are not saved.

When submitting, it only shows major categories, cannot submit to subcategories. As a mod, can only see main categories as well when trying to move something to appropriate sub-cat.

Some nice changes here. I’ve never made any criticisms before in the old design, but there have been some things that nagged at me. So while you’re making changes in v.2 maybe you’ll get to some of these?

1. It seems to be very bad UX to me to have the ’submit’ button buried in the middle of the top navigation. That’s an integral part of the site- and shouldn’t live on the same plane as other navigation. It should be called out somehow or exist up in the topmost nav.

2. The logo is just too big. I mean the size of the logo in SEland is probably on the high end of how big a logo should get, but the sphinn logo is just ridiculously large. Also it’s hugging the left side way too close.

3. The drop shadow gets cut at the top of the page on sphinn. There’s no problem on SEland so that’s a good example of how it should probably look.

So probably 2 and 3 are just preferences, but #1 really should be looked at I think. You might want to try some A/B testing or something- see if you get more submissions by moving the submit button or changing it.

Other than those minor quibbles good work and love sphinn!

Hi All - a number of bugs have been cleared - a brief update with more later.

Fixed:

Profiles/Submissions: All submissions that had at least 3 sphinns each are back and showing under the "Submits" tab. All submissions that went hot are showing under the "Hot Topics" tab.

Profiles/Comments: these are all there as well. Please advise your browser/platform is you are not seeing comments that you know to have existed.

Submitting Comments: line break and list items fixed - though I noted further editor issues in my submission of this comment

Spam Report buttons: it's back - please use it with reckless abandon if you see spam :-)

On deck to be fixed ASAP:

RSS

External widgets (buttons on other sites)

search

Some notes on feature changes:

Submissions need 30 sphinns to go hot

There are no subcategories. Previous subcategories were mapped to those you see available to you when submitting, and are in the subnav bar.

No custom avatar? No dice. Effective immediately you must have a custom avatar or the site is read only.

New avatar sizes - we highly recommend all users update their avatar. This system uses larger avatar sizes and not all users originally uploaded either square or large enough avatars to be rescaled and resized per the new dimensions. I recommend you upload a 150x150, but at a minimum, a 64x64 avatar will do.

Also note that this was not intdended as a site redesign - thus the very light changes in that regard. We did a complete custom rewrite of the platform - moving off the open source Pligg software to our own proprietary platform.

Sphinn moderator Nick Wilsdon's team at e3internet have been working on this project throughout this year, and are now working rapidly to address the bugs we're encountering. Thank you for your continued patience during the public beta and please continue to report any errors you encounter.

One more note on feature changes - many people have inquired about the previous Network tab - the page that showed all users, Top Sphinners, etc.  That's not missing, it's been moved into the Members area that is being launched after the beta is complete - end of the month.

When I attempted to modify a Sphinn Submit description, the screen didn't neatly jump back to the data entry screen...I actually had to "resubmit" the story, though when I entered the correct URL, the system did save my previously entered description.

Guys, why did you remove commentor nicks from the recent comments RSS feed? I need that to filter out crap comments - otherwise you force me to visit the /comments page and read through a ton of heystack to find one damn needle - something I don't have the time for.

Danny,

I have the Sphinn widget on my Igoogle.  Its dropped to the bottom because its become to clique.  I used to follow it, now I jump only at things of strong interest.   People are sphinng people, not ideas.  Same people day in day out.  You should work on that.  I love your stuff, I read your stuff, I watch your stuff.  But the whole sphinn thing got clubby and chic amongst people who have the time to waste  on thier 100th link building article that thier 30 friends will sphinn.

I never have nor will belong to a bowling league or play Bingo every Sunday night.

btw, I'm Michael D over at paidcontent.

series of tubes you might try the new filtering option. pick a network of people, then you can filter items to see just from those people.

How long do posts stay in the "Top 10 Most Sphunn In What's New" list?  Some of them there now are over a week old, not exactly new.  In the past, there was a limit of something like three days.  The reason I mention that is I like to use that list to find worthwhile things to read.

Also, when I first tried to post this message, much to my surprise the system wouldn't let me and said only people with custom avatars could comment.  I went out and found some image and put it as an avatar just to activate my account.  Is this really necessary?  I liked the simple green blob you used to have for most members.  Or better yet, how about we eliminate avatars altogether?  Or at least install some default ones we can choose from.

The CAPTCHA codes on Sphinn produced by reCAPTCHA are frequently unreadable - it's going a bit far against spam bots if it makes it so difficult for real people to read them too! :)

Avatar
from evilgreenmonkey 1926 Days ago #

Although CAPTCHAs can sometimes be a pain, they do prevent automated spam which would cripple a site such as this. reCAPTCHA is one of the best CAPTCHA solutions that I know of, although as the words are based on old documents and scripts, we can't guarantee 100% readability.

The reCAPTCHA box does include a button to refresh onto a different CAPTCHA though, so you're only a click away from readability :)

Just tried to report a comment as spam over at http://sphinn.com/story/122553 and received:

Also, when I tried to submit THIS comment originally it was flagged as "bad language" and captured?
