re:

"6. Build a great web site. I'm sure you want to show up on the first page of results. Ask yourself, "Is my site really one of the 10 best sites in the world on this topic?" Be honest. If it's not, make it better."

This is a major fallacy in SEO. This world is large. Whatever content (or product) you have, there are people on this world who are interested in it. The goal is to INFORM the search engine robots about what your content IS. If you inform the search engine algorithms properly, then whenever someone is searching for what you have, they will find you on the front page of SERP.

More on why this is true is in the news story I posted.

re:

"8. Don't target overly general keywords. A real estate agency in Wichita has no shot at ranking for the phrase "real estate;" a lawyer in Fresno has no shot at ranking for the word "lawyer." Optimize for relevant, specific keywords that will bring targeted traffic."

Here is another fallacy. Yikes!

a real estate agent in wichita should and can expect to rank high for a search that has the word wichita in it, and where else would people in wichita be looking for an agent? duh...

Many of these seo experts claim that you can not compete with big companies using general keywords, but that is not the case. What is more important, are the related keywords that you use, because they tell the robots that you have content that is related to the general keyword search term. That efficiency is what moves your site to higher SERP. The robots know related terms.

Someone help me please with this one:

"12. Don't allow both www.yourdomain.com and domain.com to resolve to your home page. Those are two separate addresses to a search engine, and that means you have the same content at two addresses. On a related note, don't link to your home page with a URL like www.yourdomain.com/index.html—that's also a separate address from www.yourdomain.com and will also look like duplicate content."

Why is there such a concern over this issue? The internet has always been like this, and why should we expect to be penalized for it? To me, the entire notion, is just plain silly.

Duplicate content? so what?

I never understood this argument.

It's quite simple -- if you leave those two domains as separate, search engines may treat them as separate, and you may find that the link credit you've accumulated is split between sites. Of course, search engines are sometimes smart enough to know the difference, but not always. And I've seen it personally happen, so it's good advice from my perspective.

@ #8, it is close to impossible for a smaller real estate agency to rank for the term "real estate"... did you misread?

Why would a wichita real estate firm want to rank for "real estate" anyway? For the amount of time and money it will take/cost them to rank for that term they could have eaten up all of the more targeted terms and likely gotten better leads from those more specific terms. It's not all about ranking to the big terms, it's about ranking for terms that a more qualified and have a better chance of converting once on your website.

#12, this one is a no brainer and I agree with Danny. Matt Cutts confirms this in his talk just the other day at WordCamp2007: http://www.bloggingpro.com/archives/2007/07/21/wordcamp-2007-days-0-and-1/

Seems like an excellent couple of lists to me (both the dos and don'ts). Provides a really good initial checklist to make sure nothing is missed out in the foundations of optimising a site. Especially agree with:

2. Don't wait too long to implement SEO. Whether you're launching a new Web site or upgrading your current site, SEO considerations should be part of the discussion from day one.

yeah, #2 is good advice. Fundamental SEO best practices start with a well built site/good IA.
