Thanks Andy.
Just curious - who else here Twitters? And what do you think about the idea of data mining? Do you see any potential?
Wow, that's a lot of Twitter info, Sam. I Twitter occasionally, but sometimes find it annoying. Isn't it enough to blog, submit and thumb up, comment, etc., all over the place?
Also, yes - you can reach your readers with the microblogging stuff that doesn't make it to your blog, but does everyone really want to know everything about your cat?
It comes to the point where all of us are working for social media sites for free. At least Netscape / Propeller admins get paid $1k a month for it :)
I agree with you 100% on the point that we are working for social media sites for free. But, in a way, when person A and everybody else blogs about a story in the news about Britney, or Tech Crunch, or Scobles, or Seth Godin, or Google, they're working for them for free, too.
The point I was making in my blog post is that while Twitter might be a colossal waste of time, it's inhabited by a LARGE concentration of VERY successful people. The benefit is not limited to creative Twittering but rather to a simple 1-2 punch that allows interested parties to data mine to see what people are buzzing about in REAL TIME.
It also allows you direct messages to some people with whom you might have never had a prior connection. Add to that, my way of making a lot of follows was to go to the Twitter pages of a few of the more famous internet marketers and to Follow their whole lists. A certain percentage will Follow you in return. That doesn't mean you have to STAY followed to them but if it isn't too confusing, it can't hurt.
Then, something as simple as a BLOG FEED to your TWITTER page ends up an EFFORTLESS NO-BRAINER... especially if you make a TWITTER using popular words on the public timeline.
It's REALLY simple, actually. And I'm already getting Traffic from Twitter... like 60 people in the last 24 hours... from a couple of simple TWITTER blurbs.
They aren't the same as thumbing up everything; there's a different feel to twittering. It's more of a feeling of spying on peoples private lives. Some people are fascinated at conversations between marketer X and his buddies. You can reach these people and pull them in but, again, I write for people with an aptitude for CREATIVITY... I love to explore. I like to find the "Easter Eggs" hidden in video games so-to-speak; and there's a cult phenom who do also. Same with social media apps... I like to find "the road less travelled" and share it with others who do as well. Sometimes a few people looking at something can come up with a solution that was not realized by any one person alone.
I could keep going but I think you get the point. It's not about using Twitter as TWITTER originally intended you to use Twitter. It's about discovering a way to use things that few people ever think of and using it to fatten your list/following as much and as soon as possible. If it gets stopped or flooded with competition, you just move on to the next discovery. ;-)
Cheers...
Sam
