Ever posted about reciprocal links or other linking schemes in an SEO forum? You might want to re-think that strategy. A recent patent shows us that we're not paranoid when it comes to search engines lurking amongst us.... WHY they'd bother patenting such a system... well that's another story.

in a way its fairly ironic that right next to this article about search engines crawling SEO forums for link building activity, there is an advert for Text Link Ads...

lol.... now that's relevance!! Woot! I once consulting on a site that was selling links and was in hot water - I looked at the source and they put an 'id=TLA' in the text block... sigh...

I don't tkink they spy, but Google can track link similarity between different sites and assume that websites belong to the same company, use the same SEO or spam in the same way.

Well search engines can detect interlinking, but there is always the chance of a false positive (Ive written about Sphinn and linked to it... and these entries link back to me, but was it reciprocal?) I think that approaches such as these are simply layers that can help cut down on that.

I doubt that the patent filing was for us really... but it does make one wonder WHY they'd bother to patent it really... possibly they want to hit as many things as possible to avoid future lawsuits..? Seems a more reasonable explaination...IMHO
