We had a closed beta test of Sphinn already, and huge thanks to everyone who kicked the tires hard here. If you’re curious, you can see what they said here: http://sphinn.com/story/61 We took a fine tooth come to that list, then fixed some things, added others and made a list of even more features we’d like to create. Here’s a rundown of what we’ve got so far: + Threaded/Nested Comments: We decided against having the type of comments where when you reply to someone, what you say is indented below them. We had concerns that this system can be confusing for some, plus with many replies, each one progressively gets narrower and harder to read. The disadvantage to our current system is that it might be hard to know who or what someone is replying to. For now, we suggest you call someone out by name (use their name) and actually quote snippets of what they said, if needed. In the future, we hope to enhance comments to allow some ability to bold, blockquote and other features. + Feed Management: First of all, see the Feed tab for a rundown on what we offer already and some major feeds we plan to offer. In addition to this, we might try to find a way for people to select and manage a variety of feeds here on Sphinn all at once, plus perhaps provide a way to mix them together. + Changing Username: Some want to be able to change their username. Right now, that has to be done manually. That’s not likely to change soon, so if you hate your name -- really, really hate it or made a terrible mistake -- let us know. + Highlight New Comments: How about a way to highlight only new comments since the last time you were reading a topic? Maybe! + Make Headlines Link Directly To News Stories: And to complete that thought, "like Digg." The problem is, unlike Digg, topics here can be either news stories or pure discussions. Discussions have no external link to point someone at. If we enable direct links, then clicking on some headlines in story lists will jump you out of the site while others keep you here. It’ll seem inconsistent to some visitors, so we’re not jumping out from story lists. Instead, we’re working a on a way to make the direct link that’s also listed for any story summary more noticable. + Comment Time Expiration: Right now, comments can be edited forever. That’s not a good thing, if you think people shouldn’t be able to go back in time and change history. So we’re working on a time limit feature. + Comments With HTML: So you can bold, bulletpoint, blockquote. On the list! [DONE] + Better Network Search: Indeed -- we want to make it so you can search by last name, company and many other options! + Via Links To Credit Your Blog: Found a news item and blogged about it briefly? Found it through someone else’s blog? We think there should be an easy way for you to link to the main news story but also give the blog that found it some hyperlink love. We’re working on a way to do this. In the meantime, see News Story Submission Guidelines for some additional guidance. Here they are: http://sphinn.com/guidelines.php + Better Friending: How about a feed made up of everything your friends are sphinning or submitting. Sure! How about a way to create groups for your friends? Absolutely. On the list! Why can’t I confirm several people as friends at the same time (or dump a bunch). You totally should be able to do that. We’re working on it. Also Inbox alert when someone stalks you. + Lost Username Lookup: Forgot your username? Working to make it so you can enter your email and have it sent to you. + Better Sphinn Button: Perhaps allowing you to unsphinn instead of having to go to the Sphinns tab of your profile. [DONE]One that changes to say Sphunn even if you don’t reload the page. One that could flow comments back to your blog about a story. One that might actually spin, if you click on the button itself. One that opens a new window if you put it on your site. All things we’re looking at. By the way, there are some great tools people are already making: http://sphinn.com/tools.php + Bury/Desphinn Feature: Disagree with a story? Want to vote against it? That’s commonly called burying, and we don’t offer it yet. If we need it, we might bring it online -- but we want to find a way to make it clear who buries as well as votes for things. + Email Stories To Friends: We had this feature, felt it could be used to spam too easily, so it’s on hold until we look further at it. + Speed things up: A version of Pligg, the software we use, is coming out in the near future that should do exactly this. + Widgets: "I want widgets. So, for instance, I want a handy little badge I can put on my site that links to my profile here so people can easily get to all the links to my social networking profiles. And I want the events calendar to have a widget so I can put a calendar on my site with all the events I’ll be at. And I want little icons beside the events that show if I’m attending or speaking" + Referral Stats: show how many people you go to sign-up for Sphinn. Got something else that should be on the list? Let us know below. Remember, this is the place for features. If it’s a bug -- something that’s not working right, breaking, etc -- use this discussion to note that: http://sphinn.com/story/125

Not so much a feature as an opinion. I’d like to see a change in how ads are used in the design. That’s a whole lot of ads to see every single page for a social site. I’d personally like to see ads integrated in a more user friendly way. Rands example here with Techmeme is golden: http://www.seomoz.org/blog/how-advertising-on-the-internet-should-work

I always want so many things. But two things I can think of right away: -If you’re going to use sphinn for SEL’s commenting system, I wanna do that on my blog too. I want the comments to show in my blog, and then if someone submits it here, that same thread would be somehow used in the submission thread (which would eliminate the problem you have with digg in that you have discussion in your comments and on digg... no that I would know, damn dirty burying diggers). But anyway, if comments were managed through sphinn, that would be less work for me. And it’s all about less work for me. -I want widgets. So, for instance, I want a handy little badge I can put on my site that links to my profile here so people can easily get to all the links to my social networking profiles. And I want the events calendar to have a widget so I can put a calendar on my site with all the events I’ll be at. And I want little icons beside the events that show if I’m attending or speaking or just hanging out in the bar. Not that I would ever do that.

I wish when I clicked on the Sphinn icon it sphunn it for me - not took me to the story. (As opposed to only being able to click "Sphinn It" to vote for a story).

Got another one. When I am browsing the list of headlines, especially ones that I am active in, I can’t tell if someone has responded to it since I have last posted. This forces me to view the topics for updates. Can you show when the last comment was added or the last person to comment on the topic.

Stealing some ideas from profile type sites would be good - Some other thoughts: - allow users (logged in) to block submissions by username or domain (so you don’t need to weed through crap you don’t want to read). Could also potentially use this data to pre moderate some submissions if spam becomes a problem. So for example, if I decide I don’t like submissions by MattC (sorry Matt, you’re just on my screen just now for example purposes!), then I can hide his comments and / or submissions. - Make the comments box bigger. - I 2nd Vanessa’s suggestion re: comments threads. - Ability to bookmark posts (in your own profile either public or private) would be good. [DONE] I was thinking that perhaps the sphinn button for your site could have a transparent background. As you can see from the one on my site: http://www.vanessafoxnude.com/2007/03/31/oh-the-things-you-dont-know-about-me/ (Sphinn up the cats now! You know you want to!) Transparent would make my post prettier. Not that a post about my cats could get much prettier.

Can you do a podcast all about Sphinn - how to use it, what it aims to do, all the features, future plans etc? I’m too busy to read stuff at the moment although have 30 minute train journeys round London in which I can learn stuff. Maybe do a regular "Top Sphinn Stories" podcast as well? Oh, and I’d recommend changing the password reset feature so that it doesn’t reset the login to "password". If I were (more) evil, I could seriously take advantage of that. :) Oh oh, and convert :) in comments to smilies :D

- why SEOmoz is called SEOmoz forums? - add more images to buttons. I had to resize your favicon to use it on my site in a ’submit this page’ kind of link - make your contact page more visible, at least when bugfixing (to learn the email, you need to do two clicks now in a not so obvious location. The person who wanted to contact you, but didn’t find the form, let me know he had trouble stalking me, btw)

Please, please, PLEASE for the love of God create a Sphinn button: http://sphinn.com/tools.php that ONLY appears once a story has ALREADY been Sphunn. I’m wanting to add the button - but it comes down in the next 48 hours if there isn’t a second button option with a way to ONLY have it appear ONCE the story has been sphunn.

Better take it down. Ain’t going to happen. I feel your pain, honest. But next two day will probably be spent finishing off a few pesky bugs and then getting some additional needed and missing features. Maybe toward the end of this week, unless Michelle looks and says oh, totally easy, will only take a few minutes. By the way, we could stop everything to make that button, but I’d rather finish off getting up things like a comment feed, a feed for topics and hopefully, a feed for particular stories. Because we tweaked so much with the core Pligg software installation, we lost some of these things. But if we can get the feeds back, then its easier for anyone to go out and make some fun widgets and stuff. evilgreen, yeah, that’s on the list, the password thing. i had the same evil thoughts. that’s one of those things coming before messing with the buttons more :)

Can we add counts to the friends list and stalkers list. I want to know the number of people I’m stalking without having to count the names. And maybe we could sort the network by most number of stalkees. Or, er, something. :) Not that I’m obsessed with getting friends, graywolf. Shut up.

It would be terrific if the Comment box (where one types comments) was a little taller. That would make it easier to see what you’ve already typed. That’s not really a v.2.0 issue; probably just a quick edit of a template or CSS file -- but it would make the comment box so much more usable.

Oh, we also moved Hot Topics and What’s New as top level tabs, so that you can easily jump back to them from any story. Soon, a breadcrumb trail will appear above stories to better orient you to what category you are in. We also added a new Comments tab so you can easily see all the latest comments. There are tons constantly flowing in! From comments, you can also get to the "Live" page -- just click on the All tab.

Restrict titles to one line. I don’t read headlines obfuscated by longish blog names + author ... oh wait, don’t remove the spam indicator ;) What about a "personal live page" filtering the live page (and the comments page as well) by threads I’ve commented on, or sphunn, or even submitted ... kinda Sphinn-Live-Ego-Search for folks not watching the live page all day long to follow discussions?

You’ll notice a new Greatest Hits tab up now. This lets you see the most sphunn stories at Sphinn over time or within a particular category, if you drill down. How’s that different than Hot Topics? Hot Topics always shows the latest thing to go "hot" first. This will become clearer when we get a new addition to the story summary -- it will show the "Went Hot" date and time. Greatest Hits is also our "All" tab -- want to see all things or everything submitted (except for spam, which gets removed). This tab shows you everything. Since we order it by popularity by default, we thought Greatest Hits was kind of fun. But you can sort by newest or oldest. What’s New, by the way, will eventually only show the stuff that was submitted within the last three days. That’s currently how long a story has to collect enough Sphinns to go hot. We want to remove stories that can no longer go hot from What’s New to help people who sort What’s New by popularity.

I’ve added Snap Shots to the site. If you’re not familiar with them, you’ll find more here: http://www.snap.com/about/shots.php These are the little icons that appear next to News Story URLs in story summaries. OK, they actually appear next to any link that leads off the site. In the future, we’ll try to restrict them to news story URLs. I haven’t liked site snapshots much in the past, but I think they are handy in an environment like Sphinn, where you might want a quick preview of a site to decide if it’s worth visiting to read further and perhaps Sphinn. One nice thing about Snap Shots is that if there’s an RSS feed for a site, it will pull the text for that -- so often you can read a readable text preview of the news story. We’re thinking of other ways to make news stories easier to preview and read, but I thought it would be good to try this for now. Feedback welcomed. If there’s a lot, I may spin off a new thread.

For the calendar, along with the ability to indicate attendance, it would be handy to have a way to add notes. Kinda like a bulletin board in the physical world. This would be for room sharing, ride hookups, dinner meeting times and locations, a place to ask questions not found elsewhere, like how many blocks from various hotels to the conference, etc. More functionality I know...and thanks SO MUCH for adding the "Usability" topic.

It might make sense to enable the burying of stories (sending them to Sphinn alley as I have called it) by requiring a reason for doing so to let the sphinner know why. I personally would like to be able to link to other Sphinns when referencing them in a new Sphinn’s description.

A list of "remarkable sphinns" in the profile would be nice. When you’ve tons of sphinns over time it may be hard to locate the blockbusters. An "add to evergreens" in the sphunn list would fit.

Two things, not sure if they are covered above: 1) Order the search results by most recent first, not oldest (and def. not most sphunn). 2) Offer an RSS feed of comments that are only on items that I’ve Sphunn. A tricky query, I’m sure, but that’d be an ideal way to keep track of discussions I care about rather than trying to filter through the entire Sphinn comments feed. I like the ’save’ idea discussed above too. Maybe there will be comments-from-saved-articles feed?

As sphinn is most related to web technologies and so on, a programming section would be appropriate here and code should not go to Others. I’m not sure how many coders are around but Code could / deserves to have a place of its own and a lot of code is involved in SEO and the Web. You (and me) might be all SEOs but still, code stands behind everything and everyone here and should be acknowledged accordingly especially here. Regards.
