What's Sphinn?
When Search Engine Land launched, I talked about liking the name as reflecting a community "where people can meet, talk, discuss and network" and promised that the site would be upgraded to make it easier for people to do all this (http://searchengineland.com/061211-161949.php is the original post).
It took a lot longer than the "next month or so" that I originally thought to put together what you see today, which is Sphinn. The site is designed to:
+ Provide a way for those in the Search Engine Land community to better comment on our own stories. Our existing commenting system will go away, to be replaced by Sphinn.
+ Allow everyone to share and comment on news stories about search and interactive marketing using a Digg/voting model that's appealing to some. By no means do we envision Sphinn as replacing sites like Digg. But we think that story submission model can work and be powerful in a specialized area such as search, as well.
+ Let the Search Engine Land community start discussions independently of our stories -- IE, Sphinn is also the Search Engine Land forums area. In our short history, we've gained a huge readership at the site. However, readers can only comment about what we write about, at the moment. Sphinn will let them start discussions independently of our stories or any stories that have been posted on the web. Plus, people can vote for discussions they think are particularly good.
+ Help with virtual networking. One of the great things about search marketing is how welcoming people are to those coming into the space. We hope Sphinn will allow people to set up their own virtual business cards using profiles and make friends while they are here.
+ Help with in-person networking. We run a number of Search Marketing Expo events, plus people meet up at events other than these. A common problem aside from knowing what's going on is how to network when you are there. We hope the events calendar at Sphinn will help you find things to go to plus list yourself as attending, which should help with networking.
