Social media websites like Digg, Netscape and del.icio.us are bridges which connect your website with a large audience beyond your site’s normal reach. Social websites are reliable sources of defensible traffic and should be cultivated as a means to increase your site reach and audience size.

From the page: "Not all of your readers know about these social websites so generating awareness of their existence or purpose should be a priority." I agree. Depending on what market you are in, consumer knowledge of what those little chicklet buttons mean can range anywhere from Savvy to I-have-no-freaking-clue. How would you go about figuring out how savvy your typical reader is in regard to that? Just because they don’t bookmark your blog entry, does that mean they don’t know how, or just don’t want to?

Everett, I imagine that polls of some sort may help. I used to put a poll in the sidebar for some of my sites and it helps to collect data over time. It’s a good way to gauge the overall audience knowledge level. Then again, its impossible to track user capacities when you have traffic flowing into the site everyday. Just putting up a note about the specific social community and making sure its visible somewhere on the site should suffice for most sites.. ^_^
