Danny strikes a blow for the Good Guys…er...uh... Bad Guys… Say, is Google the good or the bad this week? Either way, a very nice write up (as always:0).

Search Engine Land - In two weeks, we’ve had two "open" initiatives from Google: OpenSocial, to free social networking data from behind the Facebook walled garden and the Open Handset Alliance, to free cell phones from a myriad of complicated mobile OS platforms and carriers who want to restrict features. I’ve seen some people writing about open as the new black, with Google showing its fashion sense by dressing in the latest color. But lest anyone think that Google’s wardrobe is being replaced with an all-open line-up, it’s worth remembering that recently, open mainly fits Google when it’s behind competitively in a space. Let’s consider the places where staying closed is what suits Google best.

I agree. Google has this heroe exterior, but inside pulses a greed machine. And we should be less inocent about that fact.

DannyIt seems Google has opened up a can of worms. Thanks for the great post....sometimes only a little ridicule can do the job.I remember with nostalgia those early day at the end of April, 2007 when I wrote about the restraint Google had shown.  Ah, how I long for the cute and cuddly Google, the one that didn’t use vapor ware and market share to try to head off the competion.Google’s explosive growth to market dominance has not been obtained through bullying, predatory practices or exclusive contracts. They have not left a trail of trampled competitors whose value suddenly disappeared as Google incorporated their functionality into a new release. In short, they haven’t followed the path of other well known companies who have been accused of being too powerful. http://blog.contextweb.com/exchange/google-corporate-greed-or-responsibility

Danny Sullivan is probably the only guy in the SEO industry that can write critically about Google without losing objectivity. A nice write up.
