The desire to be number one is probably a psychological defect which has fed Human progress. But how does this effect our attitudes to rankings in social media? Will it make you rich? Get you laid? Be respected amongst your peers?

What is the motivation?

Nice find, Lyndon.  Whether or not there is a list, competitiveness it is human nature.  Some moreso than others, but it’s there.

I agree with Igor, the intro alone was worth the sphinn.  Lyndon’s comment on the post is worth a read too.  Now, I have to go and get some mammoth.

Great intro...interesting post.Competition is a good thing -- it motivates individuals to perform at a much higher level. As far a search marketers ’discovering’ stumble, I believe this is a good thing, and will raise the bar for the entire community.  I love the search marketers on stumble!  ;)

I’m not saying it’s a bad thing that search marketers discovered StumbleUpon. It’s like in heaven, when Adam and Eve discovered knowledge: they were ashamed with their nudity. Knowledge is not a bad thing at all, but it awakened the shame feeling deep inside those two. In this sense, we could say life on SU was better before: now we are more careful not to damage our power account than to offer a friend a nice day and write a review about a thing she values and we don’t care about. But the quality shall prime.

"I still have this feeling that StumbleUpon was a better place before being discovered by internet marketing experts"Great point!  I don’t even stumble anymore because everything feels so gamed and obviously produced for social sites.
