RSS is not really dead, it's just that Twitter is so much more effective, as Corey Creed explains in this post.

You can always count on Corey at Hippo Internet Marketing Training (blog:The Jungle Map) for short & sweet explanations of just about anything that happens online. Nice explanation of why more people are ignoring RSS and using Twitter and other types of "feeds" instead. I gave up on my RSS reader about a year ago. The new 'aggregators' for Social Media are much better... if you can pick one!
