This is elementry at best. Naturally, having different comments or comment flair will get you more attention. I do disagree that people actually routinely investigate commenters, and getting arbitrary traffic isn't really that amazing.

If you are commenting a lot on other blogs and not getting some traffic, attention, and subscribers, as well as making some friends, then you're probably doing it wrong. In my exprience people (blog owners) and some readers do routinely investigate the people that comment on their blogs. For example: I took a moment to check out your adsense blog spot blog just now. ;-)
I used to focus on syndicating my blog posts to get traffic. Lately, It's all about the comments. Works well at establishing connections in similar niches
