Typically, I will sign on and they will promise me a percentage. For example, 10% of profit. However, when it comes time to pay they will say. That they are extremely sorry...
Great Post. I especially like the point in #1. That you should only use CPA SEO to reduce your risk, not your cost. Too many times clients fail to get this simple fact.
Great writeup,

SEO BRO, I don't think payment problems with clients are tied to CPA/Performance SEO deals only. Bad clients is a common problem that have to be dealt with in all cases :)
Good posting, very valid ponts you're making there.
Some good points, but are they really issues unique to performance SEO?
I agree, it may sound like a good idea to pay based on performance, but I feel that the success of optimisation is such a hard thing to measure, some of the benfits are much more hidden and taking a one-dimentional view of either simply sheer volume of traffic or position in the search results almost overlooks the point of SEO.
With regards to Performance based SEO we look at it differently we charge a incremental amount when the client ranks within the top 20, top 10 or top 5 positions. this is reflective of search volumes and competitors on that term. We find that our model works very effectively.
